Okay, let's be honest - if this story isn't made for the wide screen - or at least a Lifetime movie - I don't know WHAT is! First, Lisa Engelken is the youngest of THIRTEEN children - from Big Skies, Kansas (this is a real place) :) Lisa's natural tendency to sing surfaced in places that many of us wouldn't deem as familiar...riding tractors, tying balls of hay, weeding the tomato garden, milking the family cow - you get the picture.
Along the way, this determined and multi-talented Country Girl became a "Cosmopolitan" - the name of Lisa's first Jazz vocal album. Here's what else happened along the way: Operatic and theatrical training (making use of that three-octave range!), a high level of education including a MA in Italian Literature, SINGING in Italian - and French and Portuguese. An award-winning performance in a noted San Francisco stage presentation of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" - in which Lisa played Yitzhak! If you know the play, then you're laughing :-O Wait - I'm not done! Lisa co-founded two popular groups in the Washington, D.C., area - then made a move to New York - then San Fran. By this time, she was stoned in love with Jazz - but had a foray with a Pop/Rock band called the Sugar La Las. Hah!
Fast forward to 2010 - what a year. Our fabulous singer lost a brother and that would have been painful enough. But she was also involved in a serious car accident - in which she was thrown (and landed on her head!) Thank goodness that there was good news involved during this time...the release of the wonderfully received, "Caravan."
In these past three years, Lisa has been able to grow an audience that is stunning - and new fans are gathering with her latest release, "Little Warrior." Let's get to know this amazing Lady better - she's with us in hour two!
