It was fate on that childhood day in Philadelphia, when Gail Denise Jhonson sat on her steps, waiting for her friend. When Gail asked her what took so long, her pal replied, "Piano lessons!" Gail pondered that - then ran home to ask her Mom if she could take piano, too. Thank God!
She was playing at 10, her first gig came at 14 and she has NOT slowed up. In Philly, we had basements and Gail spent a lot of time with fellow musicians, fine-tuning her gift. One that would take her to Berklee in Boston - then onward to Los Angeles, where she experienced culture shock. East and West Coast vibes are so different, but Gail had no problem fitting in, hanging out and performing WITH some unbelievable talent. Morris Day, Howard Hewitt, Vanessa Williams, Ray Parker, Jr., Pink and so many more. She met and toured with Rain Pryor and they had a ball doing Rain's "Fried Chicken and Latkes" - even traveling to Australia. A love for Gospel musicals, a leadership for music direction and a long and productive professional partnership with Norman Brown - they all proved to be joyful and successful endeavors for a multi-instrumental and multi-talented Philly Girl who was destined to do "Jazz in Pink." That's a whole 'nother story! And we'll talk about ALL of them - when Gail Jhonson joins me on Tuesday, August 14th! And we'll hear some treasured tracks from "HerStory."
Showtime is at one p.m. Eastern - our wonderfully popular guest joins us (me, along with the Chat Room), at TWO - we'll meet you there - and you know WHERE!
