There are certain names in circles in our vast region that elicit instantaneous nods of approval. Respect is something we don't take for granted in the Baltimore/DC corridor - not when it comes to those who know and play Jazz. I'm talking Jazz now. Not anything watered down or gussied up. Straight-like-I'm-Saying Jazz :) The names: The Antonio Parker Quintet. The Michael Thomas Quintet. The Resolution Jazz Group. What do these three units have in common? Darius Scott.
Ithaca born, Boston raised, and proud to be Baltimorean now - Darius had parents who made sure he saw and heard the Greats. A childhood memory: sitting on the piano bench next to Thelonius Monk. That memory stuck, because Darius became a pianist as well. He didn't start as young as some - he actually started playing in college - after a sports injury sidelined him - but, man, has he caught UP!
All of the creme de la creme players in Baltimore and Washington - Darius has played with them. And his presence is formidable - so much so that he was cast in "The Wire" and in the made-in-B'more movie, "Liberty Heights."
There is music to be shared and gigs to be discussed - Darius Scott is on fire in 2012! Let's see what one of our finest musicians has to say about inspirations, expectations, and the resurrection of legends in present-day ivory ticklers!
