Hunter Ogletree gained a wealth of experience educating youth from 2003-2005, working as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras. Beyond his primary duties educating a rural community about clean water and modern sanitation practices, Hunter Ogletree led an environmental youth club. With some 30 youth participating, Hunter Ogletree started a nursery that grew trees to reforest a local watershed. Hunter Ogletree led the youth club in constructing energy efficient stoves to replace models that wasted wood and polluted indoor home environments. From 2005 to 2006, Hunter Ogletree spent a year working for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a strategic program specialist. At USAID, Hunter Ogletree launched a website and project database that was used by congressional delegations on official visits to Honduras, as well as for outreach efforts to promote U.S. Government investments in Honduras. Hunter Ogletree had the opportunity to participate as an international observer of the 2006 Honduras elections, ensuring that the transition of political power proceeded smoothly and without disruption. In 2006, Hunter Ogletree returned to his roots in youth education as a migrant education program specialist for the Henderson County Public Schools in North Carolina. Taking a supervisory role in the logistics and planning of a summer program for over 70 migrant youth, Hunter Ogletree was successful in doubling the program size from 2008 to 2009. In addition to his summer youth education activities, Hunter Ogletree coordinated with Henderson County school officials and community agencies in assessing the educational needs of migrant Latino farm worker families. Hunter Ogletree’s strong beliefs concerning sustainable development and social justice motivate him to continue assisting at-risk youth in the future.
