When a man and woman decide to commit to monogamy in a relationship or marriage, and cleave only to their mate, what changes the agreement or commitment where it becomes an “OPEN” relationship?

According to studies, mentioned on webmd.com, the estimated number of couples in the US who are in open relationships range from 1% to as high as 9%, depending on the study.
