Join Richard Bowen of Context Travel and I as we discuss the impact of WWII on Italy and how the Monuments Men of the Allied forces and the Italian citizens saved their art for the world.
I read Robert Edsel's wonderful book Saving Italy about the Monuments Men and was inspired to dig deeper into a part of Italy's history that I've largely ignored. I guess the snob of Ancient Rome, Medieval, and Renaissance Italy got the best of me for many years...until now.
This is a fascinating subject that includes the near loss of Da Vinci's Last Supper, the loss of the complete collections of many of the museums throughout Italy, and how the Monuments Men worked day and night to protect, preserve, recover, and replace many of the world's most famous art, manuscripts, and architecture.
Be on the look out for the soon to be released movie starring George Clooney and Matt Damon as I'm sure, as much as you might like my show their star power slightly out powers mine. Also read Saving Italy, and visit http://www.monumentsmenfoundation.org/
