In what was literally a do-or-die game for the Islanders, the Isles pulled out a big 3-2 win against the Rangers in the shootout. The star of the game was Wade "Dubie" Dubielewicz, who stopped 39 shots, including three in the shootout against Nylander, Shannahan, and Jagr. The Isles opened the scoring early in the first period on a deflection goal by Aaron Asham. Miroslav Satan, who also scored the Isles' shootout goal, put the Isles up 2-0 in the second period. On an extremely lucky goal, however, Brendan Shannahan scored a shorthanded goal from behind the net to make it 2-1. Later, Nylander scored a beautiful goal off of a feed from Jagr to tie the game. Despite plenty more chances the game went to overtime and the shootout, where Dubie stole the show. The Isles now sit in the 10th spot, thanks to very little help from the out-of-town scores, still four points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They need to win all of their remaining games and hope that Montreal and Toronto lose some of theirs. That may mean rooting for the Rangers, as they host Montreal this week.
We'll talk about all of this and much more on both of this weekend's episodes of Hockey Night on Long Island. Saturday is at 3:30 PM EST after the Isles play the Flyers. Sunday is at 7 PM EST after the Isles play their final game of the regular season against New Jersey.
