For the third straight game, Mike Dunham allowed 5+ goals and the Islanders lost on the road. Tonight it was the Florida Panthers who served as the victor. In a first period where defense was obsolete, both teams scored three goals. By the end of the second, however, the Panthers had jumped out to a 4-3 lead. The Isles came out strong in the third and tied the game, but Dunham then allowed two more soft goals. Despite these blunders, Dubie remained on the bench and Dunham in goal. The Islanders scored one more, but two empty netters made the final score 8-5. While Dunham allowed six goals on the night, he isn't the only one to blame. The Isles gave the Panthers scoring chances in front of the net the whole game similarly to the game against Ottawa. With the loss, and wins by the Hurricanes and Rangers, the Islanders dropped to 9th place in the Eastern conference, out of a playoff spot.
*Both Mike Sillinger and Ryan Smyth had 2 goals on the night.
*The Islanders took only one penalty during the game.
*Ted Nolan shortened the bench to three lines in the 3rd period.
