This Saturday should be the best episode yet of Hockey Night on Long Island.  Tune in right at 3PM because for the first 20 minutes of the show we will be talking with Greg Logan, the Islanders Beat Writer for Newsday.  We'll talk to Greg about the Islanders' upcoming playoff run, injury woes, and the upcoming offseason.  Also, we will be joined by Tom Liodice, a reporter for the Bridgeport Soundtigers, the top minor league affiliate of the New York Islanders, for an update on the team (at about 3:45 PM).  Along with the interview with Greg and the update from Tom, we will recap Friday's game against Buffalo, preview Saturday's against Ottawa, and take your calls, IMs, and e-mails.  Be sure to tune in.

    Isles come up short

For the sixth straight meeting, the Islanders have lost to the New Jersey Devils.  The final score of this one was 3-2 in a game that went right down to the wire.  The Isles found themselves in a 2-0 hole early in the second period, but Captain Big Bucks, aka Alexei Yashin, scored a big goal to pull the Isles within one.  Dunham, who started in place of the injured Rick DiPietro, let up a third goal and was hurt on the play.  Down 3-1, Dubie came in and stopped the last four Devils shots.  With six minutes left Jason Blake scored a hard-working goal, but it wasn't enough despite relentless pressure by the Islanders.  The Isles have two days off before the tough schedule resumes in Buffalo and than at home against Ottawa.  It is unclear if Ricky will be back for one, both, or neither of these games.

Crazy Afternoon as Isles prepare to face Devils

It has been a very hectic afternoon in the world of the Islanders, marked most noticeably by the report that Rick DiPietro is once again injured.  In an early afternoon report, TSN reported that DP is suffering from post concussion syndrome and will be out indefinatley.  This, however, was corrected later by Greg Logan and then the New York Islanders.  DP will miss just tonight's game due to a headache.  It is undecided at this point whether Dunham or Dubie will be between the pipes for the Isles in New Jersey.  In addition, Freddy Meyer is reported to have a broken finger, adding another injury to the Islanders' blueline.  Alan Rourke is being called up to replace him on an idefinate basis.

    Isles lose heartbreaker in OT

In a game that had a little bit of it all, the Isles were only able to pull one point out.  Despite the Islanders' domination in the third period, the Rangers were victorious in overtime at the Nassau Coliseum by a score of 2-1.  As most Islander Ranger games are, this one was physical from the start.  And it was physical Colton Orr who opened the scoring in the second period.  It wasn't until late in the third that Alexei Yashin of the Islanders tied it up at 1.  Spectacular goaltending throughout the game kept it tied and it was a common theme that cost the Isles the game in OT.  With about 1:30 left, Sean Hill took a lazy hooking penalty that resulted in the ensuing powerplay goal for the Rangers.  Not only did the Isles take plenty of bad penalties, but they were just 1 for 9 on the powerplay, which included two failed 5-on-3 chances.    While the Isles got one point, fans will remember this game as one that got away.

    Episode 2: Thanks for Listening

Thanks to those of you who listened to Episode 2 of Hockey Night on Long Island.  While the show was cut to a short half-hour segment, we were thrilled to hear from a great number of Isles fans through call-ins and IMs.  We urge everyone to listen to our third episode next Saturday at 3PM EST.  We'd love to hear from you then.

    Isles get by Philly

The Islanders were able to pull out a 4-3 win Saturday in Philadephia despite an anemic powerplay throughout the game.  The Isles tooko an early lead on a Richard Park goal, but went into the first break tied one to one.  The Isles had to play from behind in the second period twice, but were able to salvage a three to three tie goinging into the third period.  The game winner came on a great pass in front of the net from Marc-Andre Bergeron to Andy Hilbert, who put the puck in the net.  While it wasn't the best game the Isles have played this year, it still counts for 2 huge points in the standings.  Of course, the weekend had just begun, as the Islanders are taking on the Rangers at the coliseum on Sunday in what may be the biggest meeting between these rivals in a very long time.
