Idiocracy and Hip Hop maurice hemingway
I watched this movie called "Idiocracy". Basically it was about a guy who is made to do a government experiment where he and another woman were cryogenically frozen. At first it was supposed to be for a year but the man in charge of this hush hush experiment gets in trouble and gets sent to jail and eventually the whole experiment is forgotten about for 300 years. As time goes by, and evolution takes its toll, people don't become smarter, they become dumber. So when the main character wakes up he's in a world of complete dumb@#%$. I don't want to tell the whole movie for folks that want to watch it, but that's basically the bottom line of it...
After I watched it, I thought, is what happened in Idiocracy, happening to Hip Hop? As time goes on, why are the artists who receive more recognition and popularity, rap about songs with no knowledge or no thought?
Here is one of my favorite idiotic hooks from Young Jeezy's song Trap Star:
I'm a t-r-a-p-s-t-rGot the streets on lock, big shoes on the carAnd she likes it (she likes it, she likes it)And she likes itI'm a t-r-a-p-s-t-rKeep barney in the suites, copt goose from the barAnd she likes it (she likes it, chyeah, ayy ayy)And she likes it (She likes it, she likes it)
That above lyrics made absolutely no sense and kids sing the song thinking "Trap star" is spelled t-r-a-p-s-t-r. and the song is one of the main contributing songs to his success!
In the movie, one of the factors to people becoming dumb is laziness. There was a part where the dude who used to be on Punk'd, was watching TV and he was sitting in a chair that had a toilet in it, so he wouldn't have to get up. I think, rappers (singers or any artists in general) are getting lazy and not putting in much thought into songs from production on down. They're mind frame is mostly about making money and not about the message they send out. Back in the day, artists who made it, put thought into their music. Marvin Gaye is a prime example. Good melodies, thoughtful lyrics and people were still able to have a good time. It was original, and it was heartfelt every time. Artists now lack emotion and heart when it comes to making their music and its all about a dollar and them thinking they could get rich quick.
It is as if people don't want to listen to songs that make them think. Majority of kids would probably listen to "Crank Dat" before listening to a Mos Def song and why is that? Some would say, "Kids just want to have a good time and Mos Def doesn't make fun dance songs". Well what if Soulja Boy made song that made you think and it had a tight beat do you think he would still have the same popularity as he got with Crank Dat? If he didn't say "super man that ho" and changed the lyrics around to something smarter, would it still have been a hit?
It's not even just kids who are molded into an idiotic way of thinking, adults are too. Is that lack of education? You could say that, but there are a lot of folks with degrees out doing and portraying characteristics of dumbasses too.
But you have to take it further than music artists being lazy and music in general. Why do people listen to and pay attention to media outlets that only dumbs you down and not make you think? People are more likely to watch MTV and BET versus The News, The History Channel or A&E (which has great shows by the way) It is as if our Society is becoming exactly what Idiocracy was all about.
So who's to blame? Who is the person getting rich from all the dumbing down of people? What needs to happen so that media outlets will start to care about what message they are sending to people?
