Based on parting thoughts Sean shared with colleagues in Residence Life upon his departure in Fall 2009, the "FreeNote" gives a dozen brief lessons culled from over 15 years working in student affairs. Brogan, known for almost never accepting guest posts, took a chance on Walker's piece, and in the process, threw any editorial guidelines he might have had out the window, posting all 7,000+ words of it. The response the post received so far has been phenomenal, with 329 retweets and 1,260 likes on Facebook as this is being written. There are many reasons one might consider doing so...feeling stuck in a career rut, a change in interests, new opportunities that arise through networking, or perceptions of "greener grass" just beyond the academy walls. But how should you go about deciding on a career outside of higher education? What do you need to consider in putting together a plan for making a successful transition? In this edition of the podcast, we'll get perspectives from Dr. Laurence Shatkin, who made a successful transition to the  corporate world after several years as an adjunct. In his current position as Senior Product Developer for JIST Publishing, Shatkin researches career topics and writes books, including "The Sequel: How to Change Your Career Without Starting Over." This week, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a new hashtag chat on the student affairs job search with Laura Searcher (not her real name) from theSASearch.Tumblr.Com, a site "dedicated to job searching and transitions in the field of student affairs." On the site, contributors share stories both wonderful and horrible, advice, best practices and red flags - all from both sides of the interview table. Like many happenstance encounters, I came across that blog after seeing a new their account in a stream on Twitter, and I followed and took notice. Not long after, I asked if @theSASearch would be interested in hosting a hashtag chat devoted exclusively to job-seeking in student affairs, and the new chat, #SASearch was conceptualized. We had a good showing for the first occurrence this Wednesday, from 11:30 s.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET. The hashtag chat will be held each Wednesday at the same time, and transcripts will be posted at the SA Search. On this edition of the podcast, we'll talk about Laura's site, and the new chat, and we'd love to take your questions and comments, and hear suggestions for upcoming topics. One theme that came up a few times in this week's chat was maintaining momentum in a job search that has gone on for a long time. We'll try to provide some perspectives on ways to " kick-start" your search when it's stalled. 01:01:00Sean Cooknocareer advice,Twitter, hashtag chat, job search, motivationThis week, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a new hashtag chat on the student affairs job search with Laura Searcher (not her real name) from theSASearch.TumblHigher Ed Career Coach: The Adjunct Job Searchhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/higheredcareercoach/2011/09/16/higher-ed-career-coach-the-adjunct-job-searchJobshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/higheredcareercoach/2011/09/16/higher-ed-career-coach-the-adjunct-job-search/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/higheredcareercoach/2011/09/16/higher-ed-career-coach-the-adjunct-job-searchFri, 16 Sep 2011 15:00:00 GMTHigher Ed Career Coach: The Adjunct Job Search Adjunct teaching positions occupy an interesting space in the higher ed job market. As such, the advice you might get about how to identify potential opportunities, and how to make a case for your candidacy is likely to be different than advice you might get when looking for tenure-track faculty posts or administrative roles. Add in the reality that many administrators look toward adjunct roles to get teaching experience, that experienced faculty who are not in tenured positions are likely to be competing for the same jobs, and that persons with industry experience are sought after in some disciplines, and the adjunct search can be mysterious and confounding. In this week's episode,  Higher Ed Career Coach Sean Cook will talk with Sharon Thomas DeLay, the founder and president of Adjunct Solutions, LLC. She has over 15 years professional experience as it relates to education, training and human resources. Adjunct Solutionss a niche staffing agency focused on building a candidate pool of pre-qualified, experienced, and enthusiastic adjunct faculty and otjob saher education professionals. March is finally here, and we all know what that means. It's time for March Madness! For most Americans, “March Madness” signifies basketball games on television, betting pools with friends and colleagues, and the mind-numbing fun that comes with working through your brackets, watching early contenders fall, and ending with an overhyped contest, resulting in the emergence of one champion. When you work in higher education, “March Madness” means something different: the great kickoff of hiring season. Candidates practice their pitches, don their uniforms, and put their game faces on. But the reward that comes at the end of this contest is not a trophy, but a job. If there are any significant tournaments during the hiring season, they are the placement conferences, both regional and national. The largest of these is the Placement Exchange. TPE, as it is often abbreviated, is the “300 pound gorilla” of placement conferences for higher ed administrators. The Placement Exchange is a partnership of NASPA, ACUHO-I, NACA, NODA, ASCA, AFA, and HigherEd Jobs. This event is expected to draw over 1200 and has 463 positions already posted. Join me and special guest Nathan Victoria, Assistant Director of Educational Programs and Social Media for NASPA. During this show, we'll discuss ways to ensure you have a good experience at a placement exchange, and take your calls.00:57:00Sean Cooknocareer, higher education, student affairs, interviews, jobsGo time! March is finally here, and we all know what that means. It's time for March Madness!
