Kees Kwant, Senior Expert in Bioenergy at the Energy and Climate Agency of the Netherlands, discusses how the biomass industry is developing both in his region and on a global scale. Global demand for biomass is rapidly increasing, especially in Europe where the EU 2020’s target for renewable energy is a major growth driver. Kees talks about how the renewables and biomass industry has developed over the past five to 10 years in the Netherlands. He explains the big challenges impacting on growth, including policy framework and problems with the biomass feedstock chain. He also talks about how he expects renewables and biomass will be stimulated in the Netherlands – in terms of action plans, mechanisms, targets, incentives – and also how local policy is catering for recognition of each player in the biomass value chain. Finally he offers his projections as to how he realistically sees the industry in 2020, based on the challenges ahead. The EU Biomass Forum 2010, will take place from 27 to 29 October in London.
