Helen discusses celebrations like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Christmas, Hanukah, birthdays, weddings, and funerals. We have personal celebrations such as graduations and awards. It is part of the human condition in all cultures to celebrate rites of passage, accomplishment and new beginnings. It is healing to join with family and friends; to stop the daily routine; to “eat, drink and be merry.” It is all good and we need these events in spite of and because of the difficult times. We don’t always feel like celebrating and sometimes just go through the motions and get through the day. At other times we celebrate all the more joyfully because we cherish the good times having tasted the bitter. Celebrations are often a rich source of family memories that we preserve on film or digitally. As children we learn about our family history and as adults pass on traditions through generations. Celebrations give us hope.
