Understanding ASCENT Clinical Trial for High Risk Smoldering Myeloma Patients

    in Health

This is the first of a 3 part series of talk on high risk smoldering myeloma and its treatments. Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is an asymptomatic clonal plasma cell disorder. There have been major advances in the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of SMM in the last few years. High risk SMM patients carry a high risk to progression to multiple myeloma. High risk SMM has been recognised as the optimal phase to test early treatment strategies. The upcoming ASCENT trial aims to prevent progression to active myeloma by 30-50% in the high risk to progression SMM patients. We are talking to Dr. Shaji Kumar Principal Investigator of the trial and Mayo Clinic expert about the nuances of the ASCENT trial.
Dr. Shaji K Kumar is Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant, Mayo Clinic Division of Hematology. Dr. Kumar is board certified in medical oncology and hematology. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association of Clinical Research, American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, American Medical Association, Association of Physicians of India, and the European Hematology Association. His laboratory focuses on development of novel drugs for treatment of myeloma and he has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including British Journal of Haematology, Blood, American Journal of Hematology, and Bone Marrow Transplant on this topic.

The History of Vaccines and Dissolving Illusions

    in Health

I know what you are thinking. Another vaccine debate. I have had my fair share of discussions about vaccines, and then I ran across a really great article by Dr. Suzzane Humphries. she points out that this heated debate is much more complicated than many people understand, including how an infant’s immune system develops and why.  Oh, and the smallpox vaccine history is probably not what you think it is.
Wheter or not you are "pro" or "anti" vaccine is irrelevant. You can't truly give your informed consent if you don't know all the facts right?
So I hope you'll join me for this fascinating interview with Dr. Suzanne Humphries as we explore these intruiging questions:
    1. Everybody knows vaccines work don't they? How is it possible that polio which was rampant before is not longer apparently because of the vaccine?  We don't see pertusses, tetanus and other vaccine "preventable" illness as much as we did in the past. It can't be all from increase cleanliness.
    2. Gardisil is being pushed on teens. There is evidence isn't there that it reduces the risk of cervical cancer?
    3. Other experts say that the reasons vaccines aren't good is because of the mercury, aluminum and detergents that are put in it that aren't necessary, but what if they made it without these toxic or allergenic components? Other argue that conspiracy theorists are just scaring people into a dangerous situation of not getting childhood vaccines as they point to the evidence of "outbreaks" of whooping cough or meningitis in school populations. What does the scientific evidence say?
Be sure to call in live to have your own questions about vaccines answered!

Mr. Divabetic Show - Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

    in Health

Tonight the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic discusses Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) on this one hour of wellness with a wow podcast.
PMDD is a severe, sometimes disabling extension of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that start about 7 to 10 days before a woman gets her monthly period.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists estimates that at least 85 percent of menstruating women have at least one PMS symptom as part of their monthly cycle. PMS is much more common than PMDD.
Biologic, psychological, environmental, and social factors all seem to play a part in PMDD. It is important to note that PMDD is not the fault of the woman suffering from it or the result of a "weak" or unstable personality. It is also not something that is "all in the woman's head."
Rather, PMDD is a medical illness that impacts only 3% to 8% of women. Fortunately, it can be treated by a health care professional with behavioral and pharmaceutical options.
Podcast Guests: Dr. Andrea Chisholm OBGYN, Peak 10 Skin founder Connie Elder, We Are Diabetes founder, Asha Brown, and Laura L. who are both living with type 1 diabetes.
Throughout the podcast we will be playing selected songs from P.M. Dawn's live album courtesy of SONY Music.
Diabetes Late Nite is a fast-paced, full-filled hour of diabetes education and wellness advice that encourages listeners to “laugh a little, learn a lot.”
