• Radiation Protection in Medicine - World View

    in Health

In the U.S., when we ask about radiation in medical imaging, we are usually just told not to worry about it. "It's less radiation than you get flying across the Atlantic." "The benefits of imaging outweigh the risks."
All that is true, and yet, we can't helping worrying a bit.
There are people in the world who take this question very seriously, none more than Dr. Madan Rehani, Director of Radiation Protection at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. Dr. Rehani and his colleagues have studied the use of radiation in medicine worldwide and are working to optimize its use.
In this interview, Joyce speaks with Dr. Rehani about radiation in medical imaging.
Medical imaging that uses ionizing radiation include Computed Tomography (CT), Mammography, and Fluoroscopy. The first question to ask is: is this the best type of imaging test to use to answer the medical question? Or might another modality that does not use ionizing radiation (such as MRI or Ultrasound) be used instead? Often MRI or Ultrasound will do the job just as well. But there are circumstances where CT is in fact needed:

CT gives the surgeon better pre-operative mapping information in certain areas

Ultrasound is highly dependent on the skill of the operator and the quality of the machine

Ultrasound is not sufficiently accurate to track the growth of small tumors

Ultrasound does not even see certain tissue types (such as the kidney tumors of HLRCC)

Dr Rehani talks about the recent advances in standardizing the terminology and calculations used by the various manufacturers of CT machines.

Everything that happened today is as it should be. Some people will tell you that you need to set lower expectations to avoid disappointment. Never give in to that kind of thinking. Everything that has made humanity great started with setting high standards and having high visions. Have big dreams for yourself. Go for the gold. Anticipate hardships. Anticipate learning. Allow yourself to detach from negative emotions associated with “disappointment”.
Disappointment has nothing to do with your progress in life. You have to allow the universe to be what it is. You have to allow yourself to feel satisfaction.Look at your emotions and ask if they are negative and if they are recurring, if the answer is "yes" banish them. Stop pouring energy into things that are disappointing and focus on what has been learned by the experience. Be excited about the learning. Develop a learning mindset and never be disappointed again.
There is a story about a king who traveled with a trusted servant who believed that everything happened for the good of all. As they passed through a foreign land, the inhabitants demanded a fee. The king sent his servant to negoitiate and the decision was that the king must chop off his little finger as payment. So the king's finger was cut off. Upon arriving home, the king threw the servant into prison. Soon after, the king was captured as he slept and the capturers prepared him as a sacrifice to their god; they discovered that he had a finger missing making him unsuitable as a sacrifice so he was set free. When the king returned home, he released his servant. The king asked the servant if you believe that everything happens for good, why was it good that you have been in prison. The servant answered, If I had been free, I would have been with you and I would have been the sacrifice since I have no fingers missing.

I am having a Very unique converstation with Dr. Charlene Brannon about a Very unique subject, the "aging odor". Dr. Brannon has found a solution for a not so pleasant challenge as we age.
Mirai Clinical is introducing recent Japanese personal hygiene advances to the American market. It is common knowledge that an unpleasant odor is frequently noticed in nursing homes. This odor, sometimes referred to as "aging odor" or “old people smell”, has been incorrectly attributed to improper facilities cleaning, or incontinence and other ailments of the patients. The problem is particularly irksome in Japan, which has a culture of cleanliness as well as disproportionately ageing population.
The researchers discovered that as skin matures, its natural antioxidant protection decreases, lipid acid in sebaceous glands gets oxidized more easily, resulting in the production of Nonenal (no-nay-nal). The minerals and water from our sweat are a fertile environment for bacterial growth, which is the source of traditional body odor noticed when we do not bathe adequately, and in locker rooms. Separately, the lipid acids we secrete "oxidize" with oxygen in the air, and transform into a different compound, which produces it's own odor. The researchers who discovered the phenomenon named the stale smelling compound "Nonenal (no-nay-nal)".
