Impact of Fatigue on TBI with Dr. Maria on Recovery Now with Kim Justus
in Health
Our regular contributer Dr. Maria Romanas is back to discuss "The Impact of Fatigue on Executive Function in TBI". As we proceed through Brain Injury Awarness Month, knowledge is power.
Many report that fatigue is their most challenging symptom after brain injury. Reasons for the fatigue are not well understood but may include endocrine abnormalities, the need for the brain to work harder to compensate for brain injury deficits (in other words, inefficiency), or changes to brain structures. Cognitive fatigue is often characterized by feeling mentally drained, apathy, and difficulty concentrating. Other symptoms include: Being easily distracted. Problems with working memory. Sound familiar? You are not alone.
Recovery Now is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life's terms. We discuss useful tools that have helped us lighten the load, of our journey through recovery.
More will be revealed! This is a "we" recovery program, because it is in the "we," that we find the new "me."
We focus on the four A's of Recovery: Awareness, Acceptance, Action and Adaptation. This is a place for survivor's striving to become thrivers, which takes a good bit of Warrior!
Hosted by Kim Justus, author of In a Flash: Miracles Here and Beyond and Hootie’s Hollow and the Magic Tree found at inaflash.org and "Like" me at facebook.com/inaflash.org too!

TBI Survival Story: A Mother and her Young Children Struck on the PCH
in Health
In August of 2019, Kim and her two young children (2 and 4 at the time) were sideswiped by a utility vehicle and slammed into oncoming traffic on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Malibu, California. PCH is known as a deadly highway. 58 people have been killed on PCH since 2010. They hit an oncoming car and miraculously made it to the opposite shoulder of the highway, facing the wrong way. Her TBI left her unable to speak or walk properly. Her young children also had suspected TBIs. Kim was unable to work for several years. They've since faced years of therapy and treatment. It's been a long journey to recovery for all of them physically, mentally and emotionally. It was a near-death experience that changed their lives in a split second. Although Kim and her kids continue to struggle with symptoms, she is grateful to have survived and proud of the progress they have made. Kim is determined to get stronger and better every day.
