“Just say the word and I’m out of here.”

I don’t recall if those were my exact words but they’re close. I was seventeen, had a date to the prom, and needed Saturday night off. My manager explained Saturday nights were our busiest. As if I didn’t know. As if working at the restaurant for over a year I had somehow failed to notice this fact. As if my absence weeks earlier in Greensboro during N.C. State’s victory over UCLA during the NCAA tournament had been of my choosing. As if…

“No.”

“No?” I replied. “Even though I’m willing to find someone to work for me?”

“What’d I just say? No. I need you here.”

“In that case, consider this my two week’s notice.”

One word can change a life, career, or friendship. I’d considered the manager my friend. He was not. He was my boss. God is my boss too, and His best friend is a guy named Word. Word was with him in the beginning. Word knows things about God I’ll never understand. Word and God are best buds.
