A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.” Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. Matthew 15:22-28

What do you do when God ignores you? Isn’t that the fear we live with — the nagging doubt that God really doesn’t notice, listen or love us? Worse: What if He’s not God at all but some superstitious myth passed down through the ages by anxious people seeking to make meaning out of desperate lives?

The bills come due, the test results come back — none of the news good. So we follow the ritual set before us by pious individuals who promise that if we’ll simply pray, believe in God’s promises and trust Him, all our cares will melt away. But the problems mount, the world turns cold and we begin to fear there is more to this business of God than reported from the pulpits and sold to us by Christian publishers peddling their trite Bible studies.
