Isaiah 64:4 from The Message   The best-selling book, The Day of the Jackal, was turned down with the comment of “no reader interest.” The book has since sold eight million copies. The Diary of Anne Frank was rejected 15 times and called “very dull,” with unfamiliar characters who bickered like a typical family. Chicken Soup for the Soul by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen was rejected 140 times. And Carrie by Stephen King? Rejected 30 times. The story goes, after the final rejection King threw the manuscript in the trash and his wife fished it out.   What does it mean to wait for God? One of my favorite sayings goes: “God is good, God is great. God is slow but never late.” This is actually one of mine. God spoke it to me one evening during a Bible study fellowship lecture. For me, that saying speaks volumes. Not because of its commentary on God’s character, but on ours. We live for the moment; God lives for the ages. We want success right now; God wants us right with Him. We imagine what we can see and hope God will give us our dreams. For almost a year I had worked remotely from my home with just my dog as co-worker company. That morning, with my RealAudio program streaming live Calypso music, I marveled at the fact that I could listen to a radio station based out of the U.S. Virgin Islands while dressed in shorts and a surf shirt. I gave no thought for tomorrow. Why should I? Life was good.   But then some days, life is not so good.   God knows the weight of tomorrow and the worry it brings. Only His shoulders are broad enough to carry the load of sorry and the storehouse of blessings the day following this brings. Had I known that September 11, 2001 would usher in such a decade of fear, hatred, and bigotry, I might have met that Tuesday with the creased brow of a worried frown. But I didn’t. He said everything God had sent man to do on earth was done. A member of the congregation jumped to his feet and said that someday man would fly. The bishop responded with the now famous line: "If God had intended man to fly, he would have given him wings." When we view the whole of creation, we realize God's work was indeed good... and incomplete. He did not give us wings with which to fly, for example, or replacement parts for failing organs and antibodies for deadly diseases. His creative work is a good start; our job is to complete the task of subduing, improving, and imagining what can be from what is. Here’s my “out.” God called me to something great. Not good, not ordinary, but grand. If you’re like me you may nod or maybe even offer an acknowledging smile when someone says “God spoke to me.” But deep down we usually think: Is he for real?Has she lost her mind? Only a crazy person hears voices in their head. And yet we have numerous examples in scripture of individuals claiming to hear God. I, too, have heard His voice. Though we clipped coupons, spent frugally, and sold off assets, our budget remained in a drought. Was it pride that had led us to this place? My sin? Though I prayed daily for provision, perhaps God had whispered from afar and I’d missed his calling. When I looked up from my Bible, I found the small sloop stuck near the same channel marker. Just when we think we’ve accumulated all we need to reach the summit, our ride stops. Casting a sideways glance, I counted the others in the elevator. Were we too many? What constitutes a crowd? Is there a fish scale in the ceiling calculating our tonnage? Far above I heard the motorized whir of pulleys spinning. With a jolt the cable yanked editors and agents and writers upwards toward our temporary rooms. I nodded at the woman standing next to me. Would my suitcase tip the scales? Would hers? The elevator shuttered to a stop. More riders pressed in and up we went. I contacted friends, cajoled and pleaded with people I barely knew on Facebook and spent hours talking to middle-school students on how to become a pirate. My mom became the book’s primary sales representative. She carries copies in her car, purse, and to church. A few weeks ago a lady ran a stop sign and T-boned Mom’s Buick, totaling it. My sweet mother took the woman’s insurance information and sold her a book. And still the book doesn’t have legs. Legs are a book’s ability to stand on its own without the help of the author. This book has wonderful reviews but no legs. In frustration I turned to another book, a best seller. There I found the fine print for success. Her father died when she was eight-years-old. Ten years later she left home and never saw her mother or sister again. When she was thirty-six she received a “call within the call.” “I was to leave and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith.” Agnes wasn’t a big wig, but through her faith in a big God, Mother Teresa’s work continues to extend far beyond the borders of her humble beginnings. His mother died when he was nine-years-old. In 1832, he ran for state legislature and finished eighth in a field of thirteen candidates. The following year he and a partner opened a general store, but the business failed. He sought to become speaker of the state legislature and lost. He applied for the job of land officer but was denied. In 1858 he missed a seat in the U.S. Senate when his party failed to win control of the state legislature. In 1860, however, he became the 16th president of the United States and God’s shepherd for a divided nation. “I am almost ready to say that this is probably true, that God wills this contest.” “This contest”—the American Civil War—cost Abraham Lincoln his life. He wasn’t a big wig, but through his obedience, he united a nation and extended the borders of freedom to an enslaved people. Four years ago the desk clerk asked if I was a minister. “If so, you get the minister’s rate.” Though I had helped found a small ministry, I didn’t consider myself a minister. I refused. Unfazed by the horror of blood on his windshield, the driver of the Buick continued, crushing the boy’s bicycle before ramming into the father, killing him. Perhaps the driver reached for an open can of beer. Maybe his fingers fumbled for more of the cocaine resting in his lap. Regardless, he drove another thirty yards before witnesses waved him down and forced him to turn around. By then it was too late—one dead, another soon to be. The prudent see danger and take refuge, the simple keep going. I’d tried to stay in touch after his youngest son died but it was hard. Saw him for a few minutes before his mom’s funeral. Tried to find him after the service, but he was gone. Maybe if I’d visited more often I could have helped. Or perhaps he was beyond help. The last time we talked I asked, “Do you still think about him?” “Every day, Eddie. Every hour.” The loss of his boy left him gutted. The smile was there but the eyes were dead. I never asked and he didn’t say but I sensed he blamed God for his son’s death. Maybe there is no God, no saving Jesus, and no hope. But that’s okay because without God, there’s no hell either. The idea that only Christians will spend eternity in the bliss of heaven while everyone else burns in hell, is “misguided and toxic and ultimately subverts the contagious spread of Jesus’ message of love, peace, forgiveness, and joy that our world desperately needs to hear,” writes Mars Hill pastor Rob Bell. Thanks to these and other great thinkers, I’ve seen the light. Blinded by it in fact. And this enlightenment leads me to conclude that Christianity is the greatest hoax ever fostered upon mankind. But the big one, the gift I look forward to every year is gone. No more Almond Joys or Butterfingers. Only the chocolate-covered wrappers remain of cousin Ricky’s candy. Each year for birthdays and Christmas Ricky sends candy, movies and homemade videos to family members. The movies are good and the videos funny and touching, but the candy is the real hit. Bite-size sweets eaten one day at a time. As long as there’s candy, the celebration continues. For his gracious gift and acknowledgment of my birthday Ricky gets nothing. No thank you card. No phone call. Only a short email. Some years not even that. And yet the gifts continue to come. God warns our deeds, good or bad, will return to us. The Golden Rule “Do unto others as they do unto you” predates the life of Christ and is as old as God Himself. “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” “Give, and it will be given to you…For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” The candy is gone but the memory of my birthday gifts remains. We could all use a cousin Ricky. We could all stand to have a few more Almond “joyful” moments in our life. And, when we consider how many Butterfinger mistakes we make each day (like my failure to thank Ricky) it becomes clear we need a God who offers the gift of forgiveness, too. Joshua 5:11-12 Oh Lord, please let me go into labor. Pleeeeaasseee, let me go into labor. That was my prayer on November 21, 1981. Nine months pregnant, living in the low country, dodging fire ants, I pleaded, No clam bake, Lord. Please no clam bake. Our South Carolina friends were wonderful to invite us to their yearly clam bake. We’d attended the year before and the fish they flopped on my plate stared back at me. Fish . . . uggh . . . I guess it was good. I zoned out as I stared back at the dark eye and crispy fin. When I came around, it was half-eaten and to this day, I can’t tell you if it was me that did the eating. But being pregnant in the dog days of summer, meant the thoughts of eating anything vaguely fishy turned my stomach. The folks in low country are the true essence of southern hospitality. Think Paula Deen, plus some. They enjoy the fruits of their coastal lands—lobster, shrimp, flounder, and clams all bring friends together for fellowship and (I suppose) tasty delights. We were dirt poor when we lived in South Carolina and it wasn’t unusual to wonder where the next meal would come from, but God always provided. He answered my prayer too. That’s why I wait until I hear her heavy breathing before patting my side of the comforter. It’s hard for her to say, “No! Shove that dog off!” when she’s ah… purring. And it’s not like I’m a big dog-in-the-bed fan. Mutt takes up all my legroom, but when I’m ready for bed I don’t want to waste time discussing sleeping arrangements with a dog. And yet I do. “No, you’re not allowed.” Whimper. “Beat it!” Sneeze. “Go on now, lay down.” Bark. “Okay, pop on up. But don’t let her find you.” Lately the patting on my side of the bed hasn’t worked. The dog stands on her hind legs wanting to jump up, but refusing. I think she’s afraid she won’t make it. It’s happened a few times. Not that many. But enough to keep her from trying. It’s trying for me, too. Makes me have to get out of the bed, pick her up, and put her on the blanket which in turn means the purring stops, a wicked eye opens, and I’m sent to the proverbial dog house — which in our case is the guest bedroom. Their goal was to create a hit record whose proceeds would go to the African famine relief project. Within days pop stars like Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, and Bob Dylan arrived at Kenny Rogers’ Lion Share Recording Studio. A few months later the supergroup released “We Are the World.” The song became the fastest-selling American pop single in history. Sales exceeded twenty million copies. Along with promotional and merchandise products, the project raised over $63 million in humanitarian aid. But the song might never have happened if the troublemakers with hot tempers and inflated egos had had their way. We’ve never lifted a finger to hit the dog or scolded him harshly and it puzzles me why he’s so fearful. I’ve recently begun to work with Spike. I figure with fifteen years of experience as a vet tech, I could surely turn him around. So I watched him a couple of days, observing the things that seemed to haunt him. It was obvious, building a trusting relationship with Spike, was the place to start. Spike’s fears pushed him into my lap and my face every time I sat down. My training began by gently sitting him next to me on the couch. When he crawled into my lap, I petted his head, reassured him, then moved him onto the couch next to me with a firm command to “stay.” It took time but we kept at it. Reassurance, love, discipline. For the past twenty years I’ve served as the poster child for bumbling boaters, periodically contributing a column called Hard Aground to any boating publication willing to pay a few pennies. Here are a few nautical terms which you won’t find in Chapman’s book of seamanship. Running aground: The act of sounding the bottom with your boat’s keel. Chart: A nautical map that shows what you just hit. Bar: A long, low-lying spit of sand or mud, usually awash, used to snag a boat’s keel. Sailors in large numbers can be found on (and sometimes in) bars. Because of my vast experience in these matters, I know the relief a skipper feels when another vessel pulls near and offers a tow. Sometimes a hard tug is all it takes to get my boat floating again. But other times, like say when I’ve run out of fuel, sucked sand through the engine’s water pump, or fouled the plugs, a tug is not enough. At those times, I need a hug. In nautical terms, a hug is when a boat pulls along side, lashes itself to the stranded vessel, and powers the boat to a safe port. This is what Job did for his friends. He prayed for them and covered their folly with his righteousness and wisdom. In the preceding verses, God told Job’s friends: “I am angry with you because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.” Job, a broken and bankrupt man, brought his friends before God and begged that God would have mercy on them. Exodus 17:1 (NIV) You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him think. Horses aren’t the most intelligent animals on earth but they’re smarter than fish. For example, you hardly ever see a horse splashing in the water, bucking its back, and trying to throw a flashy fishing lure from its mouth. A bridle bit, sure, but a lure? Never. Now where was I going with this thought? Oh yeah. Horse sense and why the key to rodeo roping is keeping the horse between you and the ground. When it comes to intelligence, humans and apes rank near the top. In some elite circles apes are actually considered smarter than people, but then people are doing the judging—people who, by their own admission are dumber than apes. Makes you wonder why apes don’t become college professors, devise their own tests, and rank our intelligence. Now where was I going with this thought? Oh yeah. Common sense and why it’s not so common. I’ve been thinking about humans and horses and how we’re both led around by something. A bit, a sin, a nudge from God. During these past few months I thought I was following God’s voice. But when I reached my desert of sin, my camp in Rephidim, I found the springs dry. Saturday morning I stood at the podium preparing to present (how’s that alliteration, class?) but the laptop refused to boot up. I pushed the on button, wiggled the plug in the power strip, and finally said: “That’s odd. It was working a second ago.” I wonder how many times Christ says the same thing about me. Peter: “Lord, what’s wrong with Eddie? Is he in sleep mode?” Jesus: “Beats me. He was working a while ago. Drove the homeless van, taught Sunday school, kept the web site up for the church. Mine was after last weekend. Doing good deeds will wear you down. Loving folks will frustrate you. Serving others will often stretch you beyond your financial means, human skills, and emotional limits. So yeah, Monday, after a weekend of deeds, love, and faith-filled service, I was powered-down. The climb was steep and two-thirds of the way up the mountain, the trail veered away from the river. Tina spent her time complaining about the bugs, whining that her feet hurt and grumbling the heat was causing her curls to droop. We stopped at an overlook to take in the view. They should have named them awfuls.” If you’ve ever sailed a boat on a body of water larger than a duck pond then you understand what a volatile cocktail wind and water can be. The trick is learning to harness both for your benefit. On a sailboat this requires a sturdy winch. Note: A wench is a female taken aboard a ship as cargo—oftentimes to service the captain in ways a mere cabin boy cannot. A winch is a drum used to control the sheet. A sheet is a rope. If you’re confused, then what I’m about to say next won’t help. When a sailor wraps a sheet around a winch and pulls really, really hard, the boat sails into the wind. This is called sailing hard on. In the old days, like say when the term social networking actually meant you met people face-to-face in places like pubs, churches, and public hangings, sailors spent months, sometimes years, cruising the Caribbean islands, sunning on the foredeck, and coming up with unusual ways to say things like: “Hey, Dink. Your yardarm is swinging free. Might want to fix that.” Translation: “Hey, Dinglehoffer. That skinny pole above your head isn’t attached to the mast and it’s about to go BOOM!” Boom, by the way, is a laterally-mounted pole (spar) to which the sail is fastened. It’s also sometimes used to jettison careless crewmembers. A few hours earlier God had told me to get off my knees, pick up my best friend, and drive across town to receive a new car. Now I leaned against the left front fender, admiring my reflection in its crimson hood. The salesman approached. He asked the question all salesmen ask when they see lust in the eyes of a customer: “What’s it going to take to put you in this vehicle?” “God,” I replied. “I don’t have any money. But God said if I came here, He’d…” The salesman escorted us off the lot. How do you hear God’s voice? I mean really hear Him? How do you hear that voice of assurance so clearly that you know the outcome before you act? Even a cursory read of Old Testament stories and the acts of Jesus shows that when God speaks, people move, change, and act. God’s whisper should propel us to go toward a place or person and it’s seldom for our benefit. The key, I believe, lies in the work done before God speaks… in the quiet moments before the miracle moment begins. For Jesus (who was Himself God) this meant rising early, before the pressing needs of the day burdened Him. Early, in the dark, outside his comfort zone, alone… he prayed. This is our pattern as well. Giving “Tanks!” doesn’t rate high in the socially-networked world where everyone is texting — sometimes to the person sitting next to them — but few appear truly engaged. God is love and allows us to love but the legacy of love can leave a bitter taste in our soul if we focus on the "not" instead of the "have." Today’s joys lie in the simple things, like the solitude of an orange orb rising over the pines and the rhythmic breathing of an infant nuzzled against its mother’s chest. It is here, at the edge of tomorrow, that the gray day bleeds red with the promise of warmth, light and hope. Economies may crash, our faith falter, but the planet continues to spin, unfurling a new day. How will you spend yours?... As our economy contracts we huddle in the fetal position clutching what’s left of our savings, scared of the future, forgetting that past. We are not the first to face gray days, only the first of this century. These are the labor pains of new life. We will survive but we will never be the same. The birthing process leaves stretch marks and scars. So how should we react to this latest storm? Here are ten facts that will not change. 1) The gulls do not store up for themselves fish and shrimp and yet they do not starve. If a bird can find food enough each day so can a man, woman and child. 2) We cannot alter the earth’s rotation or adjust the constellations in the sky and yet we live comfortably in our skin. Bruce explained to the audience of writers how his first magazine folded after just five issues. “When that first magazine ceased publication, I was certain of only one thing — I’d never produce another magazine.” Some months later Bruce did produce another periodical, albeit reluctantly. In 1978 Bruce launched Daily Walk and his ministry as a writer, speaker, and publisher exploded. “Had that first magazine succeeded, I might have been tempted to take credit for its success and that of Daily Walk. But that failure left no doubt in my mind as to who deserved the glory.” I, too, have launched and lost money in publishing ventures and each experience revealed the limits of my abilities and need for God in the planning process. What does it mean to create and fail in the thing God has called you to? What does it mean to begot and not have success? Abraham begot Isaac in his old age, but the pause between God’s promise and the fulfillment of His purpose through Abraham, spanned decades and caused him to doubt the accuracy of God’s vision, the faithfulness of His word, and the goodness of His plan. The day after I heard Bruce speak, I walked to the summit of Chimney Rock and stood on the mesa overlooking the terracotta stratus of New Mexico’s brown and tan mountains. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Song of Solomon 8:6 NIV I have a box of love notes I keep from my wife. The birthday cards and scraps of paper remind me of lips I kissed and tears I dried before I met my bride. I don’t know if these relics of my broken heart are an act of unfaithfulness or simply a sad testimony to the passion a romantic who loved… and lost in the pursuit of puppy love. First Kiss: We met in her basement for our first kiss. Everything I knew about smooching I’d learned from the movie Love Story. Ryan O’Neal and Ali McGraw kissed a lot: mostly with their eyes closed. This seemed only natural since the idea of standing that close to anyone, much less a pretty girl, terrified me. But there we were, two high school freshmen preparing to seal our love with lips coated in ketchup and mustard and hot dog chili. I advanced; she moved. I hit a cinder block wall. My aim improved by I never fully recovered from the miss… our that fist kiss that came moments later. First Love: Like so many high school sweethearts our emotions ran hot and cold, off and on. We swapped love notes in hallways, lingering looks across cafeteria tables and class rings. I suppose we both knew it wouldn’t last but pretended it would, crafting names for our kids and careers that would allow us to travel. We parted ways the night of my first Jimmy Buffett concert: each of us leaving a piece of our soul with the other. There were others. Not in a musical sense, though I suspect any God who turns water into wine can boogie and line-dance, too. But “God rocks” litter my life: pebble-size problems that appear as boulders in my tiny eyes. Every few months God calls me to the mountain. I love the beach and surf and the softness of the sand, but my encounters with God on the coast are filled with rest, warmth and reassurance. The God of the mountain is stern and strenuous. So I came to His mountain, tripping over rocks until I fell to my knees. While a cool breeze wafted through the trees I laid back, resting my head on a flat rock in the meadow on Boggs Bunion. There I thought of Jacob and his dream and in the whisper of wind I heard: What is this mountain that you want?
