Political Pistachio: Life Behind The Iron Curtain

Arkady Faktorovich was born and raised in the Ukraine, during the time the region was a part of the former Soviet Union.  After graduating in Engineering from Kiev State University of Technology and Design, Arkady was drafted into the Soviet Army.  He went in as a soldier, and came out as an officer.  After his discharge from the Soviet military, Arkady worked for an engineering firm that was involved in experimental projects. He left the Soviet Union in 1978, living in Austria and Italy until the opportunity arose for him to come to America.  He began his life in the United States in Houston, Texas, working as a gas station attendant for $2.15 an hour.  With improvement in his English skills, so did his opportunities improve.  The hard working immigrant became an engineer for Brown and Root, Inc. (Now Halliburton), and then later came to San Francisco in 1980 to work as a Senior Engineer.  In 1983 he opened his own business, became a U.S. Citizen in 1985, has married, has three daughters, and six grandchildren, and claims that this would have only been possible in America where life is good, and freedom is great.  Hear his whole story today on Political Pistachio.
