Open forum to discuss Epilepsy.  Share info and today let's talk about 504's.

Today I get to meet with the school to discuss a 504 plan for my daughter.  The admin in charged initially wanted to play dumb on this and offered no support.  I explained that the idea came from one of my daughter's teachers who felt Misty needed one.  Yes, we are so new to the process we didn't even know what one was and the person who is supposed to be in charge of this procedure was quite indifferent to our apparent need.

May I mention for other newbies out there..............Section 504 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination based upon disability.  Section 504 is an anti-discrimination, civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met.  

Funny that this section was inacted as a result of the failure of the school system to meet these needs and yet it is the very school system in charge of it.  Kind of like let the prisoners be in charge of the prison.  

Do your research.  Don't rely on the school to be your advocate as they will not.  As a parent/caregiver or epileptic you know what the situation is and you will need to be the one to establish what you need.  

So today I will be going to the 504 meeting to discuss my daughter's needs.  Wish me luck.
