Deciding what guitar to buy can be a daunting process. It should be based on a lot of different factors. Tone and feel are two important things to consider when choosing an acoustic guitar, while action and amplified sound are prominent when selecting an electric guitar or bass. How the guitar looks, what color it is or whether it has high gloss or not should only be considered after you have found something that plays easily and sounds good to you.
Other things to consider are the number of frets the guitar has, as that determines if higher notes can be played, and the body type (hollow, semi-hollow and solid body) come into play when considering what types of effects or amplification will be needed and most important what sound you are looking for. Finally, you should look at each part of the guitar (head, neck, frets, body and bridge) at an individual level and note any change of sound as you move from one type of wood to the next, or as you experiment with higher or lower action in both sound and feel. You may discover that a certain neck diameter fits your hand better, or that you like the sound of a spruce top better than all the others. You have to get out and play to really know.
In the end, if it sounds good and feels good in your hands, and comes through in the mix for the style of music you like to play, well then you've got what you need.
