When did we begin to think Masonry would never require maintenance?  There is no -auto correct sequence.  No software that sends an alert to our dashboard.  Just the soft, quiet expelling of air as if from a threadbare tire. The foundation was built strong.  Our buildings are failing. The materials we had at hand owe us nothing.  Boards warp. Staircases creak.  Windows accumulate grime making sunshine opaque.  As hairlines receded and dark turned to grey, we've grown complacent.  The trouble with complacency is that it is frequently accessorized by apathy.

Masonry today is strong and relevant as ever it has been. There is a false confidence that is demanding payment.  Relying on a Grand Lodge, often all too ready to exercise the finest edge of autocratic leadership, democratically elected so without responsibility for the masonic weather.

Are we claiming to be slaves to maths and sciences?  We don't act that way in general. Are we to believe the figures that reveal a change of seasons, a winter in hibernation are sufficient to lose confidence that we audacious men who won't be pushed back, have a purpose more important than all the shortsighted leadership, all the cultural change around us, all that modernity can serve?

We are in a perpetual state of renewal. Striving to achieve a goal that is always just beyond our grasp.

Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for?   - Robert Browning
