The Grand Orient is a secular organization like the Rotary and Lions clubs, whereas the Grand Lodges are religious-like organizations. Our Masonic lineage can be traced back through the Grand Orient of France to the Grand Lodge of England that was first established in 1717. Fraternity The fraternal aspects of Freemasonry are to be found in its ancient rituals and festivities. The rituals are a way to connect the past with the present and future. Since 1717 every Mason has been initiated into the fraternity in the same way. For some it is a rite of passage, while for others it’s a connection to the roots of the United States and its founding fathers.
