St. John Neuman lived from 1800 to 1860. Born in Bohemia, as a child he received a vocation to immigrate to the New World, The United States of America where he was ordained a priest and later became Bishop of Philadelphia. In the wake of Jesuit Bishop John Carroll of Baltimore and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton native born Americans who pioneered Catholic parochial-parish based-education, St. John is Bishop instituionalized it in a major urban city where it spread throughout the USA.
