What happens when a Black girl from Compton, California dares to dream big? What happens when this same girl holds fast to the instructions of her parents, moves beyond the family's modest income and becomes one of the most respected medical doctors in Massachusetts? You get Dr. Alice Coombs, wife, mother, commited Christian, board certified physician and current President of the Massachusetts Medical Soceity (MMS).

Of note, Dr. Coombs in the FIRST African American MMS President in the Society's 225 year history.

Her mother was a housewife, furthering her education through radio correspondence courses. Her father worked three jobs, had fourth grade education, and used his VA Hospital job to enourage Alice to look into the health profession. Now this athletic champion whose personal endurance and positive outlook on life is serving her well are background footnotes as we talk about her early years in California, her training at University of Southern California/USC Medical School and Mass General Hospital, and her passion for combating health care disparaties for people of color.
