This segment of GLOBAL IMPACT addresses the historical connection between the illegal drug trade and U.S. foreign policy in South and Central America. Our distinguished guest will be Dr. William Marcy, author of the new book "The Politics of Cocaine". In "The Politics of Cocaine", Dr. Marcy provides a thorough understanding of how and why drug policy went wrong in the Northern Andes and Central America and how we can improve the efforts at curtailing the illegal drug trade and softening its impact around the world. In his book, Dr. Marcy ably illustrates how the illegal drug trade has exacerbated leftist guerilla insurgencies, deepened poverty, and disrupted the economic life of the Northern Andes and Central America. Dr. Marcy will also provide the GLOBAL IMPACT listening audience with his critical perspectives on the geopolitical issues associated with the global cocaine trade including terrorism, international narcotics control, and Latin America's view on globalization.
