The ninth of 11 children, the youngest of six girls. Her father didn't spend much time with her as a child and left home when she was around 8 years old. She grew up with her mother, who was a nurse. They struggled as a very poor family in North Birmingham, Alabama. She attended Lewis Phillips High School. She married young and gave birth to her first daughter.
