  The Endangered State of the African American Family on The Gigi Iam Show - Part II

  Popular TV Producer, Host and Actress Gigi Iam interviews and talks with special featured guest and co-host Actress/Model/Stunt Woman, Joanna Mahaffy about the (State of Emergency: The Endangered State of the African American Family. Why Are Successful African American Men Marrying White Women & Swearing Off Ever Marrying African American Women? Part II). The marriage rate for African Americans has been dropping since the 1960s, and today in 2009 African Americans have the lowest marriage rate of any racial group in the United States. In 2001, according to the U.S. Census, 43.3 percent of black men and 41.9 percent of black women in America had never been married, in contrast to 27.4 percent and 20.7 percent respectively for whites. African American women are the least likely in our society to marry. In the period between 1970 and 2001, the overall marriage rate in the United States declined by 17 percent; but for blacks, it fell by 34 percent. Such statistics have caused Howard University relationship therapist Audrey Chapman to point out that African Americans are the most uncoupled people in the country. How has this happened?   Diabetic podiatric surgeon Dr. Bill Releford is stopping by to talk with TV Producer, Host and Actress Gigi Iam about his mission to save lives by "bringing the doctor to African American Men throughout Barber Shops around the world." More than 14 percent of African Americans age 20 and older have diabetes. Too many people are losing limbs -- or worse, their lives -- all because they will not go to the doctor; that's why Dr. Releford has launched a program that goes into African American barbershops around the country to test for diabetes. Dr. BILL RELEFORD began private practice in 1990 and started the Diabetic Foot Institute, a facility dedicated exclusively to the reduction of diabetes-related amputations in high-risk populations. Most patients were oblivious to the standard of care that should be expected during the occurrence of a diabetic foot complication or the unfortunate recommendation for lower-extremity amputation. Dr. Releford discovered that in approximately 70-85% of cases, amputation was recommended either prematurely or should not have been recommended at all.   Popular TV Producer, Host, Radio Personality Model, Singer & Actress Gigi Iam interviews special featured guests Terrah Bennett Smith, Director, Producer, Writer and Actress. has performed on Broadway, film and television. She was in the RCA recording group "Altitude" and is co-Founder and Executive Director of Empowerment Arts Conservatory, a non-profit, empowering, performing arts school for kids 7-17. EAC birth the musical teen-girl group "4 Tru" (Raise The Bar). Terrah also directed the feature film Flip The Script, and over a dozen stage plays, Television pilot presentations and music videos. 4Tru members are, Alex (thirteen), an avid singer and actor, which started in pre-school, her dream is to sing and dance on the big stage. Leah (fourteen), is a natural born performer, while performing in her school choir Leah adapted to playing the piano by ear as well as the harp, her passion for the stage has opened many doors. Kari (thirteen), aspiration in life is to become either an actor or star on Broadway. When Kari is not performing she is working really hard with school work, winning awards at school and flying her dad’s airplane all over the southwest. And, Remi (thirteen), has always enjoyed the performing arts and is currently part of the Empowerment Arts Conservatory’s performing art’s team. Remi is cast as lead in many production roles and she is also a published writer. The young ladies of 4 Tru hope to have many successful years together and empower and inspire kids of all ages with their music.
