Today’s version of Uncle Sam rides in a limo, flies in private jets, and wears solid red instead of red, white, and blue. He mismanages everything he touches and the only thing he’s good at is spending other people’s money. Case in point would be one of our Uncle’s favorite charities – the U.S. Post Office. They’ve been talking about running that public service as a business for years, but government will never support such efficiencies or accountabilities. The postal service has over 600 thousand employees and more vehicles than anybody else in the world. People and transport are expensive, but we’re writing less letters and so costs are going up as revenue goes down. They’re going to need another infusion any day now, with more to come. Solutions rest on major changes – including the end of Saturday delivery and unsustainable federal health and pension plans. That’s OK, times change and we’ll adjust. But Uncle Sam will once again dodge accountability for the mess he’s made.
