On Mega Millions’ Eve, the minds of many are enthralled by the idea of winning a record-setting $640 million dollar jackpot. Telephones are ringing and singing heightened whispers of hypothetical “If I won” shopping lists and newly created wills. In jest, my mother promised me at least a million: Sure, a fitting price for any son.

But Trayvon’s mother won’t be having that conversation. No fortune or lottery could bring him back. It will be her greatest loss. Yet. She still gambles, but this time with justice in a world of pitch and toss.
