    Cat Breeding Tips

For over a thousand years, cats and their people have lived together in some association. As has been the case for many years now, they - lagging only behind dogs - are the second most widely kept pet. If a long day in which you are frequently away from home is part of your schedule, you should definitely consider cats as a pet.

Cats do not require nearly as much attention as dogs, who need daily exercise, as all the felines need is a little food and attention. Even the smallest apartment makes a good dwelling for the creatures, as they are prone to adapting well. Many people consider them to be a great pet because their need to play and show adoration of their owners is balanced by a very faithful streak to their family, regardless of the owners' ages.

Most of the cats kept as pets are not pedigree, meaning that they have been mixed with different breeds. Due to both the high price of purebreds and the fact that there is no real advantage to keeping a purebred cat over a mixed breed, it is estimate that no more than 3 percent of domestics felines are purebred. More than 100 breeds of purebred cats exists, thanks to the classification efforts of global groups.

I can't begin to list all the various differences between breeds, but there are differences in bodies, coats, eyes, and characterization. Cats can be categorized as the short haired or long haired variety. You will have a far easier time finding short hairs, because they are more numerous.

Long hair cats are very pretty, but they require extensive grooming, and will have more frequent hairballs. The common problems that affect cats, such as fleas and small cuts to the skin, are more difficult to treat on a long hair.
