This Friday morning’s Our Daily Bread devotional took a closer look at the expression “to be or not to be.” The article pointed out how people often quote this phrase from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, not really understanding that the miserable young man was actually contemplating suicide—whether “‘to be’ (to go on living) or ‘not to be’ (to take his own life),” as the article states. As I read the devotional, my mind traveled back to a few times in my life when I pondered the very same question, only it sounded more like this: “What is wrong with me?! Why am I here? I can’t do this (live) anymore, God!” A few times, I actually took measures to end it all—swallowing sleeping pills mixed with painkillers, stepping out in front of a moving bus, and guzzling alcohol like there was no tomorrow (or, at least, I’d hoped that would be the case).
