Jewish Genealogy - How To Get Started Searching Your Roots

We will be discussing not only the Who Do You Think You Are? episode featuring Gwyneth Paltrow which aired or is airing this evening, but we will also focus on Jewish genealogy and how to get started searching for your Jewish roots.

Stanley M. Diamond is the winner of 2002 International Association of Jewish Genealogy Societies’ (IAJGS) Lifetime Achievement Award, founding president, Montreal Jewish Genealogical Society, and Executive Director of Jewish Records Indexing-Poland.  His interest in genealogical research related to genetics led to founding of JRI-Poland.  Diamond’s journey in the world of family history research and the many paths on which it has taken him were featured in an episode of a documentary series “Past Lives” on Canadian television.

Schelly Dardashti

Schelly Talalay Dardashti is a journalist, genealogist, blogger, speaker and instructor. A native New Yorker who has lived in Iran and Israel, she is now residing in New Mexico where she is very involved in the local genealogy scene.

The former Jerusalem Post genealogy columnist ("It's All Relative," 1999-2005) later wrote on genealogy for Ynet News and her work has appeared in many publications - Jewish, general and genealogical - such as The Forward, Avotaynu, NGS Quarterly.

Schelly frequently speaks at major genealogy conferences (RootsTech, WDYTYA Live, international Jewish genealogy conferences, Hong Kong, Australia Jewish Genealogy Conference, etc.), as well as local events and societies in the US.

Steve Morse

Dr. Steve Morse

Stephen Morse is the creator of the One-Step Website for which he has received both the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies, Award of Merit from the National Genealogical Society, first-ever Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Genealogists, and two awards that he cannot pronounce from Polish genealogical societies. In his other life Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering.  He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, written four textbooks, and holds four patents. He is best known as the architect of the Intel 8086 (the granddaddy of today’s Pentium processor), which sparked the PC revolution 30 years ago.

Elise Friedman

Elise Friedman

Elise Friedman is a professional genealogist, specializing in Jewish genealogy, genetic genealogy, and technology. She has given lectures and workshops at a variety of venues, from local genealogy and community meetings to international Jewish genealogy conferences. She has researched her own family history for more than 10 years, and has roots in Belarus, Russia, Poland and Ukraine (formerly Galicia). Friedman is very active in the field of genetic genealogy, where she volunteers as JewishGen's DNA Projects Coordinator, manages several DNA studies through Family Tree DNA, and co-authored a genetic genealogy case study that was published in the AVOTAYNU and FORUM genealogy journals.
