Gene On The Scene

Raina Telgemeier is a great comics artist in the making. Although
she sites Jeff Smith, who did the comics classic "Bone", as an influence,
Raina has a feel to her comics that is all her own. Her comics have a
universality that makes the reader feel empathy with her characters,
and which will stand the test of time.
Case in point:Ann M. Martin's "The Truth About Stacey" in her Baby
Sitters Club series, which Raina adapted into her 2006 graphic novel.
This is about Stacey McGill, a preteen who grew up in New York City
until her recent relocation to the small town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut
and her adjustment to new surroundings in spite of her struggles with
diabetes, baby sitting problems(and how she solved them), and a rift
with her best friend in New York which was resolved by the end of the
book. It's a good how-to book for all of these problems, told charmingly
and effectively, and which leaves a deep and lasting impression on the
reader.
