Call in to speak with the host
Jim and Jennifer welcome Dionne Carlson to the show today.
Dionne Carlson of San Diego is an activist who is part of the movement to stop the proposed Plaza de Panama Project, which will bring changes to Balboa Park that she and a large group of San Diegans find unnecessary and, for some, tragic. As chair of the Public Facilities, Transportation and Public Art subcommittee for the North Park Planning Committee, she has done her research on the Balboa Park project. According to activists' stand, the current proposal for a bypass bridge and roadway to be built onto the historic Cabrillo Bridge in Balboa Park is extremely destructive and would forever alter the iconic and ceremonial entrance to the park and the historic landscape that surrounds it. They see that this project is the seed of privatization and commercialization of the people’s park. The plan also would, they say, disenfranchise many with the introduction of a paid parking garage in the core of the park. Listen in to learn of this project and the voices who want to maintain such a historical landmark, which belongs, they say, to the people.
