From My Mama's Kitchen Talk Radio

From My Mama’s Kitchen Talk Radio is based on the book - From My Mama’s Kitchen – “food for the soul, recipes for living” by Johnny Tan. Originally intended as a cookbook to preserve his moms’ recipes, transpires into a motherly love-inspired book about his personal relationships with his adopted mom in Malaysia and with eight other wonderful women whom he refers to as “mom” in the United States. Over the years, his mothers were his “team of counselors”who provided him unconditional motherly-love. They were always available whenever he needed them – to talk, get some advice or just to sound off. This weekly talk show hosted by the author, Johnny Tan, pays tribute and honors his moms and moms everywhere for their timeless loving wisdom, spiritual and inspirational contribution in making a positive difference in the lives of their children and their loved ones. It provides a platform for everyone to share their own experiences of “motherly love” on-air with other listeners. With the support of special guests, Johnny’s vision and mission is to educate, entertain, and inspire everyone the significant role mothers’ play in our daily lives and to bring “motherly love” to center stage. What I have learned from my 9 moms – Respect the past, because it is a classroom for lessons learned. Be prepared for the future, because it is my destiny. Always live in the now, because every moment is a memorable experience. – Johnny Tan. Blended Family-Unconditional Love-If there is a will, there is a way! - Shirley Cress Dudley, MA LPC

In this last show for my Mother’s Day Special Series, the topic is going to be: “Blended Family – Unconditional Love – If there is a will, there is a way.” What is a blended family? A blended family is when two adults marry or live together, and one or both adults bring children from a previous relationship into the new marriage or living arrangement. They “blend” the two families into one new family. Regardless of how much abundance of love that is in this new family, ultimately there will always be times and situations that would require just a little bit more love and understanding from everyone to ensure the survival and success of this new union. Joining me to talk about this wonderful, challenging, and rewarding experience is Shirley Cress Dudley; a Licensed Professional Counselor from Charlotte, North Carolina. Shirley has two masters’ degrees; one in marriage and family counseling, and the other in education. She is also a part of a blended family herself, and is raising 2 children and 3 stepchildren with her husband Eric. In my book From My Mama’s Kitchen – “food for the soul, recipes for living” I talked about the unconditional love I received from my adopted mom in Malaysia and from eight other women in the United States whom I refer to as my other moms. However, in order for us to truly experience and appreciate this kind of love, we on the receiving end must consciously allow ourselves to be loved. Please join Shirley and me for a first-hand look into the making of a successful blended family, as we discuss the various opportunities and solutions available to creating a happy and successful blended family. Please call 347.327.9995 to join us live on the air with your questions or your own stories!

Blended Family - Unconditional Motherly Love - If there is a will, there is a way!

Remarried With Children: The new family dynamic! - My Last Show - For My Mother's Day Special Series for the month of May.

It’s wonderful to see successfully married couples raising their children.  But the nuclear family as we know it is disappearing, giving way to blended families that are combinations of adults and children from previous families.

An estimated one-in-three Americans are part of a blended family, and that’s expected to climb to 50% for Americans during their lifetime.

About 75% of divorced persons will remarry, and 65% of those remarriages will include children from prior marriages.

In fact, by 2010, blended families are projected to be the predominant family form in the United States.

Helping us keep step with how these families form and function is Shirley Cress Dudley,  a Licensed Professional Counselor from Charlotte, North Carolina, with master’s degrees in both  marriage and family counseling  and education.

In addition to her practice, Shirley, along with her husband Eric, is blended family with five children.

In my book, From My Mama's Kitchen - "food for the soul, recipes for living," Unconditional Motherly Love and Wisdom is the not so secret - "Secret."

Please call 347.327.9995 at 10 am CST tomorrow morning to join Shirley and I live on the air and to share your own stories!

Mother's Day Special - Honoring the Forgotten Moms - The Real Mr. Moms

Every year in May we all celebrate “Mother’s Day.” On this special day we are given the opportunity to honor and pay our respect to someone who is very special to us, someone who has and will always love us unconditionally. Although the title and role of mothers are traditionally held by women through birth rights or adoptions, there is a small group of men all over the world who either by choice or by necessity have assume the role of being a mother to their children. These men gallantly provide the daily unconditional “motherly love” needed in their household with one goal in mind – to be the best nurturing teacher, coach, and counselor to their children and loved ones. Although I am not one of them, writing my book From My Mama’s Kitchen –“food for the soul, recipes for living” gave me the opportunity to truly reflect back on the various heartfelt moments I had shared with my nine moms, and I can relate to the various challenges and rewards of being a mom which was a humbling experience for me. Please join me and my special guests for a frank conversation about stepping up to the plate to meet the challenges, and at the same time enjoying the rewards of being the Real Mr. Moms! Please call 347.327.9995 to join us live on the air with your questions or your own stories!

    Coming to a Full Circle - Mother-Daughter - Breast Cancer - A Family Affair!

Special Guest: Desiree Jacobsen, MSMC, a recent graduate from Texas Christian University Topic: Coming to a Full Circle – Mother-Daughter – Breast Cancer – A Family Affair In 2007, approximately 40,460 women were expected to die from breast cancer. Only lung cancer accounts for more deaths in women. Guided by the above astonishing fact, Desiree Jacobsen concentrated her thesis research study on African American women and their breast health communication. In African American women, breast cancer is the second most common cancer death preceded by lung cancer. Previous researchers studied traditional media outlets to disseminate ideal breast health messages to African American women; however, interpersonal communication has proven more effective than traditional media outlets. With this in mind, Desiree discovered a health communication model that focuses on interpersonal communication. Throughout the study African American women introduced Desiree to a unique interpersonal communication network. One component of the network included the relationship between mothers and daughters within their respective generation groups. The relationship took on a generational role reversal in which the younger generation takes responsibility for the older generation in terms of health care. In chapter eight of my book From My Mama’s Kitchen –“food for the soul, recipes for living,” I wrote about – Coming to a Full Circle, where we as children will eventually become our parents’ parent. For some of us this paradigm shift will be gradual, but for some of us it may be quite sudden. It is how we approach and manage this shift that will result in a successful child-parents/parent-parents relationship synergy. Desiree will be joined by PhD candidate, Jessica Sullivan, who can speak first-hand on the generational role reversal among African American females. Please call 347.327.9995 to join Desiree, Jessica, and me live on the air!

A Mother's Day Special - Celebrating Motherhood in the 21st Century - Linda Juergens - NAMC

Special Guest: Linda Lisi Juergens Executive Director, National Association of Mothers’ Centers Topic: A Mother's Day Special - Celebrating Motherhood in the 21st Century Motherhood can be exhilarating, yet frightening, joyful, and yet confusing. It can be the most rewarding-and undervalued-job in the world. Recognizing these challenges, realities and value of mothering, the National Association of Mothers’ Centers since 1975 has offered a community-building model that has successfully laid foundations for hundreds of Mothers’ Centers programs around the country. These programs offer moms and other caregivers a sense of camaraderie, peer support, empathy, information, and resources for their hard work of parenting and care-giving. As the collective voice of mothers in the United States, they work and serve at both the grassroots and national level by providing: • Support to more than 30 Mothers' Centers around the United States • Organize high-impact conferences and events about parenting, maternal health, child development and work-life balance • Bring issues related to motherhood and care-giving to the center of public policy discussions through their Mothers Ought To Have Equal Rights (MOTHERS) In the “Food for the Soul” section of my book From My Mama’s Kitchen –“food for the soul, recipes for living,” I wrote about our mom being our teacher, coach, and counselor. It is all about creating and loving. It requires patience, a happy attitude, and a touch of love. Over the years, the National Association of Mothers’ Centers have successfully created a safe, nurturing environment that lead to healthier and happier mothers, healthier children, and families, which gave birth to community excellence! Please call 347.327.9995 to join Linda and me live on the air!
