While preparing for our past show “The Destruction of Black Women” I felt that this was an issue that would pass and go. However, I found myself hours, even days after the show pondering the concept. “Destruction”. I wanted to use this word because it described so many women to the “t”, including myself. We have been caused so much destruction and frankly this has made us leery to trust, love, and pursue happiness.
I will take myself as an example. Ever since I hit 14, there has always been some guy trying to smash. I grew up watching all of the male figures in my life misuse, hit, and disrespect women in all types of ways. I watched as my mother worked day and night and also manipulated men into paying for her lifestyle. I was in countless relationships where I myself was used and mistreated, not valued or respected. And I was taught by almost every female member on my maternal side to learn to do for myself and not wait or want for a man. Needless to say, my experiences have caused me to be destructive. My entire way of thinking was destructive and I kept finding relationships that further caused me to be destructive.
After having so many failed relationships and attempts, I started to pride myself on being alone and figured that there was no king waiting for me to be his queen; that good men were a rare thing, and those who knew for a fact that they were a good catch were more interested in dating and smashing as many women as they could with no real feelings or cares. I had become really settled on the idea of being an independent woman and just having a dog for a companion.
I love being independent and I don’t like asking men to do much of anything for me. Aside from it ruining my independent self, I also hate to learn if they really want to help me or not. But do to my destructive way of life; I have grown to be a woman who thinks of herself as a man…okay not like that. What I mean is someone who is so strong and who provides that I think I am the head of household and can do whatever a man can. But I am not a man, and from this weekend’s show I have learned how to be more open to letting a man be a man, and valuing myself so that I will not accept just any kind of treatment. It is okay to have my own, but whatever I do, I can never be the man in my life.
It also took me a while, but I did think of a good example of a loving couple with a great relationship….my paternal grandparents Reverend and Lady B. They are in their eighties, but they love like two twenty-year olds. They still hold hands, say I love you, and support each other. They even still dress alike! And that is my new goal, to have a love that is unconditional.
