As the father of two small children, I can attest to the fact that “teething” is one of the most painful times of early childhood. Few things are more heart-wrenching than watching your baby struggle with tender, swollen, and painful gums. The good news, however, is that these painful times quickly pass, and with daily brushing, many people never have teeth issues again.
On the flip side, there are many children and adults who let their dental care slip a bit, which can lead to gum disease. The mildest form of gum disease is called gingivitis, which simply means that your gums or swollen or inflamed. According to the American Academy of Periodontolgy, gingivitis can be cured by improving your daily dental hygiene.
If left unresolved, gingivitis can worsen and lead to a condition called periodontitis, which can lead to gum infections, bone destruction and tooth loss. Now, as bad as this condition sounds, there is an even darker side to periodontal disease. Several years ago, the American Dental Association reported that gum disease is a likely risk factor for heart disease and stroke for adults under the age of 55, regardless of whether a person smokes or not.
Surprisingly, many Americans have no idea that their gums are diseased, even though the health effects are so grave. It is very important to have your teeth and gums evaluated at least twice per year to rule out dental problems, because a healthy smile could extend your life!
