Recently, I had a conversation with a client who expressed to me that the scale had betrayed her. I asked her to explain and she told me “that scale” had just said she weighed 5 lbs less only a couple days earlier, how could it now betray her and dare to show 5 extra pounds?
Before I took the scale apart to examine it, she and I say down to review what had happened the previous week nutritionally, physically and emotionally; to see if we could get to the bottom of this. During our conversation, she revealed that she had actually had a couple of “not-so-good” days. By that, she meant that she DID NOT stick to her nutritious regimen and she only did one day of cardio. Hmmmm…the plot thickens. She also confessed that she scarfed down an entire box of ice cream sandwiches (there are 6 in a pack, for those of you who don't know) AND she was hit with the some pretty disturbing news on her job; she may not have one soon.
WOW! It that enough to make you go over the edge or what?
Let's tackle these events, one at a time. First, the stress of finding out such life-altering news as your job may be in jeopardy sent her stress levels through the roof. Once that happened, her body went into “fight or flight” mode, where it reasoned that she needed extra energy to take care of the problem.
Her body began the process of producing fuel for the energy it thought she needed to take care of business; however, there was no “real” emergency such as running for her life, so all that fuel just remained unused. Then, to make herself “feel better,” she turned to her comfort food containing loads of sugar.
So, not only did her body fail to utilize all the fuel (calories) that were produced earlier because she didn't perform any physical exertion, she compounded the problem by adding more sugar into her system. That added sugar that her body didn't need will be broken down to glucose—the body's fuel, but if it isn't used, it will be stored as fat, hence the 5 lb gain.
So when you look at it like that, its really not the scale's fault, is it? The scale is only a numeric representation of the amount of unused energy (fat), blood, muscle tissue and bones that your body is carrying around.
My suggestion is the next time you feel the twinges of stress, go for a walk or run, not only will you feel better, but you'll also burn some excess fat.
