Thank you for the balance of your teachings and shows. Continue to share and empower GOD's creation to learn from their experiences and forgive and show mercy even when it hurts; because we are the role models our children learn from. They learn from what they see us doing and they look to see if it matches what we are preaching and demanding. I am In Love With JESUS CHRIST, Cecelia

WHAT IF: Our Divisions Led to Our Destruction?

As a young child, I was a hard-core comic book fan.  Superman and Batman.  Spiderman and the Black Panther.  I never came across an X-Men title that I didn't enjoy reading.  But it was Marvel Comic's "What If?" series that interested me the most.

The "What If?" series featured a character named The Watcher.  The Watcher, well, watched the antics of Earthlings from the Earth's moon.  The writers and illustators at Marvel Comics used The Watcher to offer different endings to already presented stories.  The stage for these story retellings was set by asking one simple question: "What if...?"

And that is the question I ask today.  What if we human beings weren't supposed to be divided along racial/ethnic lines?  What if we were designed solely for God the Father's glory, to be the recipients of his favor?  That would be pretty amazing, wouldn't it?

Because of our limited knowledge about the universe, I think we human beings are doing ourselves a disservice when we discriminate along racial/ethnic lines.  On Monday, July 14th, during a segment titled WE MUST NEVER FORGET: The Civil Rights Movement Then and Now, I even suggested that we human beings won't decide to come together as a family until we are faced with a threat outside of this planet.  I say this because most, if not all, of us go through life thinking we are God's gift to creation.  Not once does it dawn on us that there may be someone looking for us the same way we're looking for them.  And if they're looking for us, what are we doing now to prepare ourselves for first contact.

If other beings from other planets had the technology to pay us a visit, I think our divisions would be obvious.  I also think White Anglo-Saxon Protestant males and females would do everything they could to direct these visitors' attention to their own culture while ignoring the cultures of other ethnic groups.  I say this because the National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA) and other science organizations have the audacity to ignore the lack of diversity within their ranks.  Persons of color need to be active participants in the exploration of space, search for alien life.

I also think the space probes that have been sent out as peace offerings misrepresent who we are as a people.  Pick up a copy of your newspaper.  Flick through its pages.  Tell me what you see.  I'll tell you what you see: If you're a person of color, more specfically a black American, you don't see yourself.  What you see is a system that omits every other race except the one in the driver's seat.

And this is what these alien beings will encounter after downloading the information contained in these probe's databases.

But I have a few more "what if" questions for you.  What if we were indeed created in God the Father's image for his glory, to be recipients of his favor?  And what if we were only given these physical bodies so that we could be prepped for new challenges in other parts of the universe.  What if the spirits of deceased family members, friends and acquaintances are already meeting these challenges head on, engaged in a battle against princes and principalities, the rulers of the dark world.  To me, that would be a higher purpose, one that truly makes meaningless the secular things in life.

I think George Lucas (Star Wars) and Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek) got it wrong when they convinced us that alien life will resemble creatures that look like Wookies and Vulcans.  If there are other beings out there, I can almost guarantee they look like us.  Why, you ask?  Because we were created in God's image and placed on planet Earth by him.

Here's something else to consider: What is the only supernatural power that human beings have that every human being knows about?  That would be the power of conception.  We have been gifted by God the Father to create other beings in God the Father's image.  This supernatural ability is at its best when one man (Adam) and one woman (Eve) love each other unconditionally, becoming one in mind, body and spirit.  So, when we heterosexual couples become intimate, we're not just making love to each other; we're also making love to God.

Something is going on out there, people.  And we have to do more to reconstitute the human family during the short amount of time we spend on this Earth.  If we don't, we're going to die divided, having missed a golden opportunity to discover if what we think is out there looks anything like us.

Follow-Up to "It Can't Just Be Me" with Derek Eady Interview

On Thursday, July 10, I was a featured guest on Derek Eady's blogtalkradio show "It Can't Just Be Me" (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/EadyMedia).  This experience was a truly positive one, as Derek posed questions about the state of the black family that made me pull from both my personal and professional lives.

Today's blog is a follow-up to this conversation.  There were a number of things that I wanted to say but didn't get a chance to because of time constraints.  If I had been allowed to speak outside the allotted timeframe, I would have let Derek's listeners know that our parenting role is not about controlling our children, it's about influencing them through our words and deeds.

Sadly, most parents have long histories of trying to control their children through reward and punishment.  I feel we employ these techniques because these same techniques were employed with us during our own childhoods.  But I submit to you that the use of these techniques should not be overused, mainly because it becomes a tug for them to get what they want (selfishness) rather than give what others need (selflessness).

Giving what others need should be a shared value among members of the Black Diaspora.  We Blacks are constantly being told by certain individuals and systems in this country that our citizenship is second-class.  It's true we don't accept this as fact.  We too were created in God's image.  But what we Blacks sometimes fail to do is give each other those words of encouragement that spur us to build upon the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s.  And without these encouraging words, many of us continue to settle for mediocrity rather than excellence in our pursuit of temporal and eternal prosperity.

During my conversation with Derek, I fielded a call from a lady who had questions about the best way to deal with her daughter, who is going through what many refer to as "the terrible twos."  She also cited an incident in the grocery store, when her daughter wouldn't budge after repeatedly being told to do so.

I first suggested that she take a deep breath and then count to 20.  I offered this suggestion because oftentimes we parents don't think before we act.  Thinking before we act is a must, because we can't fulfill the role of child's first teacher if we are not in control of our own thoughts, feelings and behaviors.  We will be prone to lash out at our children in anger because their misbehaviors adversely impact our egos, embarrass us even.

I next suggested that she reframe her perception of her daughter's stage of development.  Rather than call it "the terrible twos", I encouraged her to call it "the terrfic twos."  I offered this suggestion because one's mindset has a drastic impact on how she relates to her children.  Yes, there will still be times when the twos -- or any developmental stage for that matter -- seem terrible, but we will relate positvely to them because we understand it is God who blesses us with children.  This gifting is terrific, worthy of daily celebration.

But a discussion about the state of the black family wouldn't be complete without mentioning natural and logical consequences.  Natural consequences are those naturally occuring events that follow children's acts of disobedience.  All we parents have to do is stand back and watch as the learning takes place.  Logical consequences, on the other hand, are the mutually agreed upon (between the parent and child) disciplinary actions  that are imposed by us parents on our children following their disobedient behaviors.  Logical consequences are usually used with older children, while natural with younger ones.

But how are these consequences being played out for us, the black collective?  Granted, no one collective has prescribed logical consequences for us.  If they did, they developed the prescription without receiving input from us.  Truth be told, though, no one racial collective is the parent of another.  However, I do believe black American lives are adversely being impacted by our growing desire to free contemporary white Americans from any and all guilt they may have about the way their ancestors treated our ancestors.

Our black ancestors are pleading with us from their graves to continue the fight for social justice.  Many of their lives were snuffed out through the unrighteous manuevers of racist Whites.  What we should be doing more of today is engaging Whites in thought-provoking conversations about how we Blacks can achieve parity with them.  We shouldn't end these conversations with Whites until we get sincere confessions of guilt, heartfelt apologies, and a commitment to work with us Blacks to deconstruct the thoughts, feelings and behaviors undergirding racial prejudice and discrimination.

The state of the black family is good, but it isn't great.  It will only become greater when we take a few moments to conduct a thorough analysis of our condition.  We need to analyze our condition by looking through three separate lenses -- the one concerning our collective thoughts, the one concerning our collective feelings, and the one concerning our collective behaviors.  We also should take stock of the way we're being portrayed and marginalized by mainstream society, and the role we play in allowing this type of mistreatment to continue.  Once we black parents gain a better understanding of what has been, and continues to be, done to us, we will begin to see how important it is to build up our black children's capacity to thrive as human beings while they're residing in our homes.

FROM VIDEO VIXEN TO WONDERFULLY AND FEARFULLY MADE

On Tuesday, October 9th, during an episode of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, comedian J. Anthony Brown made reference to a moniker that Karrine Steffans used during her days as a scantily-clad dancer in some of the most popular hip-hop and R & B music videos. After Brown called her “superhead,” Steffans abruptly ended her call to the show, presumably because she was offended by his remark. She probably also sensed that the interview was beginning to take a turn for the worse.

But as I replayed the exchange in my mind, I couldn’t shake the fact that, by hanging up, Steffans missed a golden opportunity to speak to the young women who continue to let themselves be objectified in music videos, even allowing high-powered men to take advantage of them sexually just so they can be in the company of Hollywood’s elite. Her first book, "Confessions of a Video Vixen", reportedly was written to shed light on her carnal and superficial relationships with music moguls, rap artists, actors and television personalities. However, confessions are only good if they come from truly repentant hearts.

Because Steffans followed up her confessions with the recently released "Vixen Diaries", it’s obvious she discovered a niche market that will make her richer, her high-powered suitors shameful. But how will she explain the life that she once led to her now nine-year-old son when he starts asking the hard questions. Will the information that she shares inspire him to objectify women or treat them with the respect deserving of queens?

You would hope that Steffan's son would grow up wanting to cultivate healthy and meaningful relationships with members of the opposite sex. You would also hope that one of these relationships would result in a marriage that withstands the test of time. But if his mother continues to share her sins with the rest of the world, he will undoubtedly be confused when it comes to relating to females. And Karrine Steffan's, like the rest of us, will come to know what it means to reap what you sow.

I would have a much deeper appreciation for Karrine Steffans if she had used her two books to talk about her acceptance of Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. But because she has never attributed her transformed thoughts, feelings and actions to this acceptance, it’s obvious her motives are driven by selfish ambition. Steffans knows how to play the game, and she’s doing everything she can to get what she can while the getting is good. In short, she is beating a paternalistic entertainment industry at its own game, that of dogs eating other dogs to eat more dogs another day.

But like King Solomon writes in the book of Ecclesiastes, everything under the sun is meaningless. Yes. Karrine Steffans will sell a boatload of books, but when all is said and done, and she's buried six feet under, she will be remembered as “superhead”, not for leaving behind a legacy of Christian faith, obedience and service. For this reason, I pray that she writes a third and final book, one titled “From Video Vixen to Wonderfully and Fearfully Made”.
