Thank you for the balance of your teachings and shows. Continue to share and empower GOD's creation to learn from their experiences and forgive and show mercy even when it hurts; because we are the role models our children learn from. They learn from what they see us doing and they look to see if it matches what we are preaching and demanding. I am In Love With JESUS CHRIST, Cecelia

TO THE WORLD'S ENLIGHTENED: The Seed

    this small ebony seed
    tells my story, says,
    "where do I go
    from here.
    it in my hand,
    i on its exterior,
    locked together
    by a bond of commonality.

    murky innards of a world
    gone mad.
    soil hardening daily,
    extracting the gift of life
    from our beings.
    pushing us lower,
    lower,
    lower
    until darkness
    becomes a home.

from the depths of the earth
    we dream.
    soft, moist soil
    with the sun shining brightly
    among the heavens/
    employment, marriage
    success.
    reality revealing soil
    devoid of nutrients,
    dream deferred.

    WE DESIRE LOVE,
    RAIN THAT INVIGORATES,
    REJUVENATES,
    AND LETS ONE KNOW
    THAT SOMEONE
    CARES!

THE PRICE OF ADMISSION: Why White America Must Change Its Ways

By now, many of you have already listened to the two podcasts I produced on the continued miseducation of black Americans.  I have already done this excessively over the past few days, but I would like to thank Khalif Muhammad and Earl Christian III for their wonderful contributions to these two shows.  I encourage you, my loyal listeners, to visit their YouTube Channels to learn more about how they're making a difference in California and New York, respectively.

Today's blog is titled "THE PRICE OF ADMISSION: Why White America Must Change Its Ways".  This topic grows out of my dissatisfaction with the way we black Americans continue to be treated by white Americans in this country and in other parts of the world.  Granted, many of us black Americans continue to buy into the lie that we're inferior to everyone else.  If this wasn't the case, the 2005 graduation rate for this country's black high school students would not be 55.3 percent.  If this wasn't the case, more of us would be purposeful in our interactions with the world rather than disengaged.  More importantly, though, the Black Haves would be doing more to work with the Black Have-Nots so their condition can be improved.

That last reason is probably the most telling, because I equate this disassociation to black-on-black crime.  But you have to understand the psychology that is fueling the Black Haves' misbehavior.  Experience has shown me that most successful Blacks look down on their disadvantaged brothers and sisters with disdain, telling themselves, "If I can do it (i.e., graduate from high school and college, secure a college degree, and earn moderate to high wages), then so can you."  This statement is true, especially in this period of collective prosperity, but the fact still remains that this message falls on deaf ears because there is no convergence of the Black Haves' words and deeds.

We Black Haves have a penchant for jockeying for the attention, acceptance and praise of privileged Whites.  Oftentimes, we find ourselves on a quest to show them that we have the stuff to be prosperous.  But once we achieve this prosperity, they tell us either directly or indirectly that we're still less than them rather than equal to them because we can't do anything to change the color of our skin.

Truth be told, white Americans are the ones who need to change their ways the most.  They must understand what Jesus Christ meant when he said, "The first will be last, and the last will be first."  Jesus was making a distinction between the prideful and the humble when he made this statement, but I think it also has applications for this on-going soap opera called "Racism in America: These Are the Days of Our Lives".

I don't think God will condemn white Americans as a collective for the pride that they exhibit during their interactions with Blacks and other persons of color.  The only collective that God sees is the human collective, the group of people that he created in his image.  But I do believe they will be judged individually for the contributions that they make to the maintenance of this racist system.  The same holds true for those Black Haves who exude pride, not humility, when they lord their success over the Black Have-Nots.

Both Blacks and Whites must work together to deconstruct this racist system.  It starts with contemporary Whites taking full responsibility for their ancestors' creation of a system that everyone knew in their hearts and minds would never be in vogue.  It ends with these same contemporary Whites apologizing to Blacks through their words and deeds, extending their arms toward Blacks for an overdue embrace.

The prideful will be last, and the humble will be first.

Barack Obama and the Campaign to Reconstitute the Functional Family

Two days ago, I witnessed an event that increased my confidence in America's ability to get its act together.  On Tuesday, June 3, 2008, Illinois Senator Barack Obama became the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.  He accomplished this feat by securing support from superdelegates within the Democratic Party.

As I listened to Senator Obama's speech on the Cable News Network, I had a difficult time containing my emotions.  A lone tear trickled down the left side of my face to rest in the left corner of my mouth.  "He did it," I said under my breath.  "A black man.  Change we can believe in."

But why?  Why do I believe Obama's change will be better than changes being proposed by Senator John McCain, the Republican Party's nominee?  Because the most telling change during this presidential election season is represented in Senator Obama's personhood.  By being bi-racial - the offspring of a black father and white mother - his presence on the political stage compels us to question our past and present prejudices.  It also prompts white Americans, the heirs to unmerited privilege, to get in touch with the preconceived notions that cause them to look down on black Americans and other persons of color.

This past Tuesday, Pamela J. Gentry, senior political producer for Black Entertainment Television (BET) News, was the featured guest on my Internet radio talk show "FIRM...but fair" with Jeffery A. Faulkerson.  The title of this segment was AGENTS OF CHANGE: What Must Black America Do to Reclaim Its Image?  Gentry and I talked about Senator Obama and the stereotypes that have caused black Americans to feel less than, white Americans more than.  We black Americans have been told by unenlightened white Americans either directly or indirectly that we lack the intelligence to be leaders of the free world.  The same held true in the world of sports, more specifically football, when these same unenlightened white Americans almost convinced us that the term "black quarterback" was an oxymoron.  But a number of black guarterbacks have gone on to lead their teams to championship seasons.

But we black Americans are also demonstrating our skills sets in politics, medicine, law and a host of other fields.  We're not succeeding in these fields for power and control.  I believe we just want to be respected for the flavor that we add to the mix.  It is this flavor that will encourage those who falsely believe they are better than us to stand down, realize that their expanded egos are barriers to progress.

In five months, we will be casting our votes for two men - the first a bi-racial American, the second a white.  Most people will vote for the person who has the best chance of restoring order to the nation and the world.  I, and countless others, believe that candidate is Barack Obama.  To us, Senator Obama understands what it means to be looked down upon for being different, not just by Whites but Blacks as well.  And it is these differences that will bring about a reframing of what it really means to be human.

Barack Obama is writing the first entry in a journal that lets the world know we humans are more similar than different.  I'm certain stereotypes about Blacks from Jim Crow America will rear their ugly heads in both the black and white communities, but I hope we can deal with these stereotypes as Americans, deconstructing them so they will not be stumbling blocks for future generations.  In the final analysis, each of us must adopt the belief that we are all God's children, and he wants us to find satisfaction in Him and our neighbors.  He also wants these relationships to be authentic rather than superficial.
