Film Geek Central

Eat. Pray. GEEK!

At last, our long national nightmare is over. After a two month hiatus, Film Geek Central returns with an all new episode!

On this episode, we'll take a look at Julia Roberts' new film, EAT PRAY LOVE. This film is based on a book that was on the bestseller list for nearly three years. Roberts plays a middle-aged woman who decides she's in a rut. So, she decides to ditch everything for a year and travel the world. Expect lots of eating, praying and loving.

This might be your only chance to see an A-list actress actually eat something.

The film is directed by Ryan Murphy, who has done two successful TV shows (NIP/TUCK, GLEE) and one not so successful film (RUNNING WITH SCISSORS). This film is supposed to be the counter-programming event of the summer and there's no reason to think it won't do well.

While the wives and girlfriends are enjoying that film, the guys will be getting together for some serious male bonding with THE EXPENDABLES. Called everything from "the greatest cast of action stars ever assembled" and "the manliest movie ever made" just in the advertisements, this film is passing itself off as a direct injection of testosterone into your retinas.

"And after the explosions, we'll have a bunch of strippers dance on top of the Washinton Mounment. Too subtle?"

A band of mercenaries gets sent in to do a mission and then has second thoughts. And who is the cast they've gathered for this one? This one has a lot of action pedigree with stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Randy Couture. Also, Mickey Rourke is looking more and more like Charles Bronson, so that counts too. If that weren't enough, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger put in cameo appearances as well.

Poor SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD may get lost in the shuffle this weekend unless the buzz can get people away from their XBox 360's and into the theatre. Too bad, because this is one of our most awaited films of the summer. The film is directed by Edgar Wright who did the amazingly cool SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ. Based on a popular comic series (which neither of us has read), the film stars Michael Cera as a shy musician who falls for a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who has baggage. That baggage is seven evil exes who now must battle Scott to the death. Wait, what? Oh, the Scott in the movie not the Film Geek Central host Scott.... moving on....

What she said.

Although the 1990s were littered with buddy cop movies, we've kind of missed them. After COP-OUT, we now get THE OTHER GUYS. This one stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as two desk jockeys itching to get out of the field and be crazy super cops. Now, we have mixed feelings about Ferrell on Film Geek Central, but neither one of us is entirely for or against him.

That building is doing a great impression of LAND OF THE LOST's box office.

So, who knows what we'll think this time out? Let's just say that if it rubs Scott the wrong way, Eva Mendes is in the film assuring it's still worth the price of admission. Wait, I'm Scott. Man, writing in third person is weird.

CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE is the sequel to a nine year old film that did so-so both with adults and kids. So, naturally it gets a $100+ million follow-up. Dog and cat secret agents, bitter enemies for centuries, must put away their differences to stop an evil hairless cat named Kitty Galore (voiced by Bette Midler - and only looking slightly worse than actual Bette Midler) from taking over the world.

And yes, INCEPTION. We've been gone a long time so we haven't had a chance to talk about some of the bigger summer films. Thankfully, we can finally put our two cents in on this film that has had people talking and debating endlessly for the last month and a half. Do we need to run down what the film is at this point? No? Didn't think so. Needless to say, people have been talking about this endlessly, some questioning the dream logic to the point of wondering if plot holes are even plot holes.

"Just pretend this took me two minutes."

We'll do all of this plus some film news and our DVD Picks.

The whole thing happens Sunday, August 15th at 8:00 PM Eastern / 7:00 PM Central on Film Geek Central. Listen to it live and join our chat, or download it for later along with all the other past episodes of Film Geek Central.

And of course, you can make sure you never miss the show by subscribing to us on iTunes.

We've also got pages up at Facebook, Twitter and even poor old MySpace (which at least one of us prefers to Facebook, but never mind).

We've been gone a while, with Scott's schooling and Austin's filming. So, stop in and say hi to some old friends on Film Geek Central! Hope to see you there, geeks!
