Film Geek Central

Attention, film geeks! You know who you are! Film Geek Central is a new spin on the old review show. Scott Davis and Austin Kennedy have been published in various media outlets. Each of them also comes to the forefront with some knowledge about what it takes to make a great film, without the prejudice that weighs most shows down. More than anything, Film Geek Central is a new podcast, by film geeks and for film geeks.

Show Notes

Photobucket

Every week, Scott Davis and Austin Kennedy check out the latest, but not always the greatest films in the multiplexes. Everything from the biggest blockbusters, to the smallest indie films to the latest foreign films. Scott and Austin are film geeks by birth, keeping a critical eye on things, but bringing a lot of humor and energy to the proceedings as well. They don't always agree, but it's always entertaining.

This week, Film Geek Central sucks!

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON has the enviable pop culture hype usually reserved for films with three times its budget. Honestly, we're not TWILIGHT haters here at FGC. Both of us thought the original film was decent and could certainly see why it appealed to its target audience. Truth be told, we're sort of curious to see where this series goes with the second installment.

PLANET 51 is supposed to be the next big CG-animated film, but will it have what it takes to work in such a crowded market? In it, a conceited American astronaut lands on a planet that turns out to be home to a domesticated alien species.

THE BLIND SIDE is the type of film designed to get Oscar buzz. Sandra Bullock plays a well-off southern woman who takes in a large, shy teenager with a mysterious and tragic past.

AN EDUCATION is the bittersweet story of a sheltered girl in 1960s London who falls for a man twice her age. Star Carey Mulligan is being tipped as someone to watch.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL is a chilling horror film from Ti West. A woman agrees to house-sit for an evening, only to become increasingly on edge due to the strange events around her. Genre greats, Tom Noonan, Mary Woronov and Dee Wallace show up in supporting roles.

BLACK DYNAMITE was Austin's pick for his most awaited film of 2009 and its easy to see why. It's a spoof/throwback to 1970s blaxspoloitation films whose trailer has been getting people excited ever since it appeared on the net early this year.

All this plus film news and our DVD Picks of the Week. Hope to see you there, Film Geeks!

  • Date / Time:

  • Original Air Date:

State of Play, Hannah Montana, Observe and Report, Dragonball

A week in film that will test the mettle of any man or woman hoping to hold onto their sanity. Hopefully STATE OF PLAY will be a great return to form, or OBSERVE AND REPORT, starring Seth Rogen and Anna Faris will be a comic gem. This week sees the release of HANNA MONTANA: THE MOVIE starring Miley Cyrus and her leech/father Billy Ray Cyrus. But that's not all, we also get DRAGONBALL, the live-action American film based on the excruciating anime series.

  • Date / Time:

HANNAH MONTANA KILLED BEN AFFLECK'S MISTRESS

Hannah Montana killed Ben Affleck's mistress. Fortunately, Seth Rogen was on the case. With his Dragonballs.
Great show for you this week with plenty to get under our skin.

We've got four new reviews this time out, starting with STATE OF PLAY, a return to the paranoid conspiracy thrillers of the 1970s. It stars Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Rachel MacAdams and is directed by LAST KING OF SCOTLAND's Kevin Macdonald.

The moment you've all been waiting for - HANNAH MONTANA THE MOVIE! You all know Hannah Montana, she's the rock star who doesn't rock. The tween corporate music franchise makes its way to the big screen. This one was Scott's Least Awaited Film of 2009 (waaay back in Episode 0), so it should be interesting.

If two things will define film circa 2009, they will be Seth Rogen and mall cops. With OBSERVE AND REPORT, they combine the two as Rogen plays a delusional mall cop who uses a hunt for a flasher to springboard himself into legendary status. This one comes from the director of THE FOOT FIST WAY, which is developing quite a cult following on DVD.

While the adolescent girls were supposed to take in HANNAH MONTANA, the boys were supposed to take in DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION. Based on the long-running anime series (or several series, if you wish), this one stars Chow Yun-Fat and Justin Chadwick in a film about a group of people brought together to defeat an alien menace.
On DVD, we take a look at THE READER and THE SPIRIT.

And that's it. You can catch us live at BlogTalkRadio on Sunday at 8:00 PM Eastern/7:00 PM Central. - http://www.blogtalkradio.com/filmgeekcentral

We're also on iTunes and if you think this is the last time we're bringing that up, you're crazy. - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=312450055

And remember, next week is our big SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW. It will be an exhaustive rundown of all the big movies coming out from May to August.

  • Original Air Date:

Fast & Furious, Adventureland, Sunshine Cleaning

This week, Scott and Austin take a look at FAST AND FURIOUS, ADVENTURELAND and SUNSHINE CLEANING. Also, Scott takes solo look at the new faith-based film, C ME DANCE while Austin does a solo check-up on SERBIS and THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH. Plus, news and DVD reviews of stuff like DONKEY PUNCH, NOT EASILY BROKEN, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and more. Check it out!

  • Date / Time:

FAST CARS, CARNIES, CRIME SCENES AND THE DEVIL!

Interesting title to the blog, no? Well that's just some of what you'll get on this week's installment of Film Geek Central.

First up is the fourth installment of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS called... er, FAST & FURIOUS. This reunites everyone from the first film, as well as the director of FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT. Huh.

Next up is ADVENTURELAND, a coming of age story from Greg Mottola (SUPERBAD). It's a coming of age story starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Ryan Reynolds.

Next up is SUNSHINE CLEANING, where two equally messed-up sisters decide to make ends meet by starting a service that cleans up after violent crime scenes. This film stars Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Alan Arkin and is directed by Christine Jeffs.

Both Scott and Austin will be handling a couple solo reviews this time as well. Scott checks out a faith-based drama with supernatural overtones, C ME DANCE. Meanwhile, Austin checks out SERBIS from Brillante Mendoza and THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH starring Sienna Miller, Mena Suvari and Nick Nolte.

We'll also take a look at a few DVD releases, including the 2009 films DONKEY PUNCH and NOT EASILY BROKEN.

So that's it. Be sure to check us out at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/filmgeekcentral

The show airs promptly on Sunday at 8:00 Eastern/7:00 Central. We'd really like you to be there for the live show. If you're not, never fear. You can stream us at any time or download the episode to your hard drive.

    See you there, Film Geeks!
