Attention, film geeks! You know who you are! Film Geek Central is a new spin on the old review show. Scott Davis and Austin Kennedy have been published in various media outlets. Each of them also comes to the forefront with some knowledge about what it takes to make a great film, without the prejudice that weighs most shows down. More than anything, Film Geek Central is a new podcast, by film geeks and for film geeks.

Awards season is here at Film Geek Central, time for a more sophisticated type of motion picture, reviewed by your unsophisticated hosts. PRECIOUS is sure to be one of the big films mentioned when people talk about the best films of 2009. This film about an illiterate, obsese inner-city teenager from an abusive home is drawing raves across the board. Will we agree? BROTHERS is another remake of a foreign film, but this one isn't about long-haired ghosts. When a man's brother is assumed killed in action in the Middle East, his brother cares for his wife and children in his absence. His affection for his brother's wife starts to cross a line however, which becomes exceedingly problematic when the original brother returns. Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhall, Tobey Maguire and Sam Shepard star in this film from Jim Sheridan (MY LEFT FOOT, IN AMERICA). If you want action this weekend, the only place to go is ARMORED. In this film, a struggling armored truck driver decides to go along with his co-workers as they rob one of their own trucks. When violence erupts however, he rebels against his co-conspirators. EVERYBODY'S FINE is an episodic drama in which Robert De Niro decides to pay surprise visits to his grown children, none of which are having the easiest time in their lives. Finally, TRANSYLMANIA seems an odd choice to get major theatrical distribution. But anyone who wants to get in a few yuks at the expense of the recent wave of kinder gentler vampires might want to check it out. Also, Scott will discuss the influence of genre icon Paul Naschy, who passed away this week. All this plus film news and our DVD Picks of the Week. Hope to see you there, Film Geeks!

Can you smell what the Mouse is cookin'?
First up, the newest reboot from Walt Disney Pictures. RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN stars Dwayne Johnson, formerly the Rock, in a remake of their 1975 hit, ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN. Disney has been doing this for a while with films like FLUBBER being an update THE ABSENT MINDED PROFESSOR and THE SHAGGY DOG being remade with Tim Allen. We know those didn't go well, but what about this more serious property?
"Okay, just erase the title and the tagline. We're going to use this same poster for like five horror films this year."
Another remake of a completely different sort, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a remake of Wes Craven's grindhouse cult classic (which itself was an unofficial remake of Ingmar Bergman's THE VIRGIN SPRING). In it, two girls are abducted and abused by a roaming pack of murderous, degenerate thugs. After disposing of their prey, the thugs seek shelter at the nearest house, which turns out to be owned by the parents of one of the girls. These horror remakes have been coming quickly, but how does this one differ from the pack?
Amateurs. I moved on to Hustler when I was twelve.
Completely screwing up a potential theme show, MISS MARCH turns out ot be an original concept. How dare they? In this one, an pro-abstinence guy wakes up from a four year coma, only to discover his girlfriend is now a Playboy Playmate. Now, he and his perverted friend go on a road trip to confront his now airbrushed love.
Weirdest. Production of A Chrous Line. Ever.
SHUTTLE may or may not have hit theatres near you. It's doing one of those "select cities" gigs this month before it hits DVD in April. In it, a group of travelers are terrorized by the driver of their airport shuttle.
"Are the 15 year old girls opening their wallets yet? Sweeeet."
In our DVD section this week, we'll take a look at the blockbuster, TWILIGHT. Also, third time may be the charm with PUNISHER: WAR ZONE. And Kristen Scott Thomas gets moody in French in I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG.
Also, movie news which unfortunately includes the premature passing of actors Ron Silver and Natasha Richardson.
Check us out live Sunday at 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time at our official site at BlogTalkRadio. If you don't catch us live, you can stream our show later, or download it right to your hard drive. First up is Steven Soderbergh's massive four hour epic, CHE. Benecio del Toro plays Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Released in two parts, we will be tackling the whole thing as one sprawling epic. People tend to be scared of long films. Is this one worth your time?
Next up is PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND. Elle Fanning (Dakota's little sis) plays Phoebe, an artsy child who is ostracized from her peers due to her strange habits and even stranger behavior. Phoebe is inspired when she tries out for the school play, Alice In Wonderland. The film co-stars Patricia Clarkson, Felicity Huffman and Bill Pullman.
Next, we have a film that's been getting loads of buzz. GOMORRAH is a film that promises to take an unflinching look at the new crime families in Italy.
Some of the best films of 2008 were released on DVD this week as well. We'll be taking a look at MILK, RACHEL GETTING MARRIED, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, ROLE MODELS, TRANSPORTER 3, CADILLAC RECORDS and HAPPY GO LUCKY. We'll also take a look back at Paul Newman's first film, THE SILVER CHALICE.
See? Told you we'd give you plenty of show. Remember, you can check our show out at BlogTalkRadio live Sunday at 6:00 PM EST. Or you can stream it or download it to your hard drive at a later date. All our old episodes are available there too, so feel free to catch up.

Hello film geeks, Scott here: This week promises to be our most intense episode of Film Geek Central yet, since we'll be adding an enticing new spin on things. THE FAN AND THE VIRGIN - WHAT MADNESS IS THIS?!? Well, it's out. And though we are separated by over a thousand miles, both Austin and I have watched the WATCHMEN.... er, movie that is. This film, which I named my most awaited film of 2009 back in Episode 2, hits the screens with a lot of buzz sure, but possibly also with quite a bit of controversy. Here's the thing - while I have read the graphic novel a few times and hold it high as possibly the greatest thing ever done in the comic form, Austin has purposely not read it. As early screenings began to happen, he noticed how many early viewers were so-called "fanboys" and thus decided that he would not touch the source material until after the film was released. Hence, you are going to hear two views on the film. For myself, I will look at the film through the eyes of one familiar with the story, but simultaneously trying to separate any preconceptions about the material into an honest critique of the film. Meanwhile, Austin has a task far more daunting. Having no familiarity with the story, how does the film hold up to the millions who will go into the film completely blind? It's a dicotomy you won't see most places. But that's not all....
20th Century Fox tires for some counterprogramming by bringing us STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI. The film stars Kristen Kruek (SMALLVILLE), Robin Shou (THE MATRIX 2-3), Michael Clarke Duncan and a straight-from-MIAMI VICE Chris Klein (AMERICAN PIE, ROLLERBALL). This is the second American film based on the STREET FIGHTER video game, the first being the campy Jean Claude Van Damme vehicle from the early 1990s. Will this one hold up better, or will be pray for the more innocent times when Raul Julia could levitate on screen?
Lest ye believe we're all about the action at Film Geek Central, we will also be taking a look at James Gray's new film, TWO LOVERS. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw in a morose love triangle. Is this the little movie that could?
It's a good thng it's a big week at theatres because DVD pickings were slim this week. One major exception - AUSTRALIA from Baz Luhrmann, the director of ROMEO + JULIET and MOULIN ROUGE. It didn't make much of a dent on this side of the globe. We'll be taking a close look at telling you if you missed a gem or dodged a bullet on this one.
So, that's the show this week. It promises to be a good one. Hope to see you all tune in SUNDAY MARCH 8th at 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time on the Film Geek Central Website at BlogTalkRadio.
If you do miss the show - shame on you. But don't worry. You can still stream the show at a later date, or better yet, download the whole thing to your hard drive.
Hope to see you there, Film Geeks!
