Jays Journal Podcast - December 6. "Perception is Reality."
As we approach the dead of winter mired in what has been an off-season of general confusion, growing uncertainty, and profound sadness, it's comforting to know that with the winter meetings only days away, we'll finally get a chance to see what this Toronto Blue Jays front office is prepared to do next. With the future of the club's ownership ambitions now up in the air, one wonders what 2018 holds in store for a much maligned leadership group desperate to instill confidence in their increasingly embittered and largely cynical fanbase.
On tonight's episode we're thrilled to be joined by Ainka Jess (@justbeingaj) of She's 4 Sports (@Shes4Sports), Marshall Auerback (@Mauerback) from the Levy Institute, and our very own Jays Journal site expert and resident country music star, Chris Henderson (@Baseball4Brains). Together, they huddle around host Ari Shapiro and fearlessly tackle the following streams of baseball consciousness:
On the recent Stroman tweet regarding the departure of Goins (3:19), why the franchise seems to be struggling mightily when it comes to public relations and fan perception 101 (8:15), what needs to happen for Mark Shapiro to make this his team (13:01), on the issue of club likeability and how the Blue Jays are perceived relative to other Toronto pro sports franchises (19:41), the manner in which the club pursued the Japanese Babe Ruth (26:16), on the health of Tulowitzki and Travis (29:18), what if Guerrero Jr., Bichette and Alford stumble along the way to expected stardom (37:08), and how the Rogers brand has been weakened by the Gregg Zaun firing (44:01).

  • Cleveland Browns: Sashi Brown fired, Hue Jackson safe for another year

    in Football

There is never a dull moment as a Cleveland Browns fan. Jimmy Haslam decided to spice up the 0-12 season by firing Sashi Brown and hiring a new GM in John Dorsey in the span of 12 hours. This episode was recorded before Dorsey's hiring, but we still cover all the fallout from Sashi being let go and how Haslam declared Hue Jackson's job to be safe for at least another season. And by the way, the Browns do have a game this Sunday. Maybe Hue can finally pull out that first victory now that his nemesis is gone.

  • Take the Black Podcast: We look back on the second half of Game of Thrones S7

    in Television

Welcome to another episode of Take the Black, Winter is Coming’s Game of Thrones podcast. This week, we continue our look back at season 7 recap, picking up with “Eastwatch” and going through to the end of “The Dragon and the Wolf.” Our panel picks (and nitpicks) through the highs and lows.
    Our topics include:
Jaime and Bronn’s escape from Drogon. Too much? Is Cersei’s pregnancy a fake? We gush over Jon Snow’s bonding moment with Drogon. Jorah returns, but he hasn’t left the friendzone. Fermented Crab must taste awful. We tackle Jon Snow’s quest to catch a wight. We weren’t huge fans. “Beyond the Wall” in general takes a bit of a beating. On the rebound, we loved the Dragonpit sequence from “The Dragon and the Wolf.” We discuss the dimensions and implications of #BoatSex, which was made all the better because of Kit Harington’s amazing bottom. Littlefinger’s death was awesome, but the story that led it… Undead Viserion was scary as f*ck. What happened to Tormund and Beric? As usual, Take the Black leans heavily on the NSFW side (beware of F-bombs). You’ve been warned.
UPDATE: Apologies for the technical difficulties. The episode should play just fine now.

    in Football

Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 34 - NY State of Mind
Open: Seattle Seahawks Fans, welcome back to the Hawks Playbook Podcast. Join us as we recap the great complete team win in the Big Apple against the NY Giants.
Featured Segment: Seahawks win on the road vs. the Giants
Seattle finally has a pretty good complete game. The Seattle Seahawks dominated this game on both sides of the ball and moved the team to an overall record of 4-2.
The offensive line played well overall. Odhiambo and Glowinksi allowed only 1 QB pressure each out of 42 attempts. Ethan Pocic did not allow a single pressure on 22 snaps at left guard and center.
Seahawks again have the #1 scoring defense in the NFL. Against the Giants the Seahawks allowed 177 total yards and 1 TD, after getting the ball at the Seattle 17 yards line as a result of a Thomas Rawls fumble.
Giants had 300 combined rushing yards in previous 2 games. Seahawks allowed 46 yards and zero runs over 9 yards.
Seattle’s defense (outside of Titan’s game) has allowed 12.2 PPG and 281.4 YPG. They have not allowed more than 18 points scored against them in the other 5 games.
Featured Segment 2: Game Preview – Seattle Seahawks vs the Houston Texans.
The Texan’s come into the matchup with a record of 3-3 and 3rd place in the AFC South. The Texans have wins against the Bengals, Titans and Browns and losses against the Jaguars, Patriots and the Chiefs.
The team is led by rooking phenom Deshaun Watson, the 12th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Watson has plenty of playmakers around him but an OL almost as bad as Seattle's.
Seattle’s offense can’t expect to face a stout run defense led by Merceilus, Clowney and McKinney. They also have a playmaker at middle linebacker in rookie, Zach Cunningham.
