Episode 4 Frankly Better Internet Marketing

Frank discusses the concepts of instant gratification in marketing, the combination of online and offline techniques, and the law of persistance. We also present the second half of the interview with Ann Seig, author and highly successful Internet marketer.

  • Date / Time:

    Instant gratification

We are so very driven, by the television, by our work, and by the hype that we experience in the sales of our online business opportunities to expect instant gratification. Americans are quite famous for their desire to see instant results but in my humble but considered opinion, much of the rest of the world is catching up fast.

Its not my purpose to go into the idea of what nationality is least patient, in the end, the answer has no bearing on my topic. Suffice to say that without regard to the rest of the world, Americans as a group are very impatient; we want results as soon as possible.

However, when it comes to the topic of Internet Marketing, who can blame us? It’s all we hear, we get bombarded with promise after promise of how we will be rich by tomorrow if we just opt in today.

Is it possible? I won’t say it’s impossible, anything is possible. And it’s undeniably true that large sums of money have been accumulated in very short time periods repeatedly on the net. In fact, for some people it happens over and over.

In that concept, I can find my point. Those few people who accumulate large sums of money over and over on the net have refined their skills to a high level. Does this mean that it can’t be done by a new marketer? Again, anything is possible, and if the right combination of events take place, and the newbie happens to be at the right place at the right time, and the sun and moon and all the stars in the heavens line up in just the right way.......No, who am I kidding? It’s just not possible for the newbie to get rich overnight.

If you are serious about Internet Marketing as a career, you must be prepared to put in the work that’s going to be required. There are SO MANY skills that must be learned, so many arrangements that have to be in place.

Let’s consider what would have to happen for a person with no experience in Internet Marketing to make big money quick. Understand, this is NOT overnight, that simply cannot happen....I'm just talking about a short period of time right now, maybe a month or so.

You have to set up your website, open an account where you can accept credit cards, and set up an auto responder account....those are bare minimums, and all that is AFTER you have chosen a business. Next you have to stock your auto responder with letters, put an opt-in form on the website, find a place to host it, and start placing classified ads. All that is before you can even BEGIN to sell.

That’s the point when the sun, moon and stars have to start lining up....people have to find, trust and respond to your classified ads. They have to seek out your website and opt in. Not only that, but you have to get enough people to do so that you will start making sales and become rich.

After that comes the actual selling....the vast majority of people who opt in at your capture page are doing so not to buy your business, but to find out more about it.....or more likely, to take advantage of whatever free offers you might have promised them. For that reason, you must hope your auto responder does the job.....or you might decide to make contact with the prospect yourself, and try to convince them to buy in through direct selling.

Now, depending on your ability to sell, your closure rate will most likely be around the 10% mark, statistically speaking. If you are really good, your conversion rate might be above 50%, but that’s phenomenal, and it just cannot be sustained for any real meaningful length of time.

So, depending on the income you make per sale, and how lucky and skillful you are, you might actually make some money pretty quickly....in the first two months or so. But let’s get to a more likely scenario.

Much more likely is that you will take some time, and build up a LIST of prospects. You will take even more time and acquire the trust of these people. You will take yet more time and build relationships with them. Eventually, they will begin to buy things from you.

What is my point? Am I trying to discourage you? Not at all, but there’s a reason why it’s important to understand all this. If you go into this business with the expectations that you are going to get rich in a big hurry, and it doesn't happen, as it so often does NOT ....you are going to experience a deep discouragement, and have the distinct feeling that you have been scammed. THIS more then anything else, is what creates the high failure rate in this industry, and destroys our credibility as a legitimate business opportunity....the sky-high promises, followed by the stark reality that this is a complicated and competitive industry. It’s only those who know this going in....or who simply refuse to accept failure....who have the slightest chance to survive that first huge let-down.

My purpose in sharing all this stark truth is only to help increase your chances going in, that’s the truth. My message is to be prepared to work, and be prepared to wait. It’s possible to make money in the Internet Marketing industry, but it’s not in getting rich quick, that’s for sure.

    Intergrational Marketing

While we would all love to believe that our website will do the selling for us, those few of us who are going to make it in this online jungle realize that sooner or later, its going to require personal contact to make sales. For some of us that is a deal-breaker, plain and simple. Either we are excessively to shy to consider doing such a thing, or we simply have philosophical objections to selling in general.
If you want to make it as an online marketer, if you want to beat those oft-repeated statistics that upwards of 95% of all online marketers fail, you are going to have to come to grips with the personal contact aspect of this job.
Perhaps I am different...I know for sure I am different then I used to be. I was once so painfully shy that I rarely opened my mouth for any reason beyond eating. Those days are behind me thank God, because I have found, upon opening up to the concept of interacting with people, that people are not so bad after all.
It is absolutely true that they have faults, and it is also true that some have bad intentions...but it is equally true that most people are good at heart, and it’s also true that the help of other people is the single best way to move forward in life.
It is a two way street, of course. You should have the mindset when you are operating your online business that you have put yourself in the unique position of helping other people solve the problems in their lives. You should have the knowledge in your heart, in the deepest parts of your being, that what you are promoting can help other people solve the one single, most common need they will express to you, the need for more money.
This ties in with what I have said before about mindset issues, that if you believe in your sales opportunity, and transmit that enthusiasm to the prospect, the sales WILL happen. Once those sales happen, you will be solving your own needs to make extra money, and once that happens, the enthusiasm grows, from the solid foundation you are building that you can help people solve the issues in their lives and make extra money.
In my case, I love the interaction part of the job, it is my favorite part. I have gone from being painfully shy to more outgoing then most people, and as such, I have reaped GREAT benefits from increased interaction with other people. When I contact people, I do so with an open mind and an open heart. I come from the standpoint of genuine desire to help, and from that standpoint, it is easy to be outgoing, and it is much easier to handle rejection.
Rejection? It is more confusion or fear it is then rejection, in most cases. Its confusion because if I honestly believe I can help the prospect, the idea that they don't want that help must stem from a lack of understanding on their part of the ways I can help. Either that or their resistance is a result of fear of being scammed.
I cannot speak to what is in the prospects mind, but either way, from my perspective the whole nature of the sales interaction changes, and it is much less painful to approach prospects. If you can adopt that form of mindset, you are way ahead of the game, because the prospects resistance is not taken personally.
If you can shed that fear of rejection, you can venture further into the personal aspects of marketing, the part that gets beyond the website and the auto responder This is the part that Ann Seig refers too in a recent interview I had with her on Blog Talk Radio as Integrational Marketing, using a combination of online and offline techniques to convince the prospect of the value of your opportunity. I am making the assumption here that the auto responder is in place for you, and your website is up and running.
Once you get a prospect, or a "lead" as is more commonly referred too, the auto responder will do what it does, and that is a very important part of the picture. However, if you are willing to extend beyond the automatic emails, you will find that your conversion rate, the ratio of leads to actual closed deals will skyrocket.
Get on the telephone with the prospect as soon as possible, preferably as soon as they sign up. This is where the mindset I just referred to becomes so very important. Here is the plain honest truth....by signing up in you are website, they have already exhibited a desire to learn more about what you are offering. So call the prospect with confidence that your call will be well received.
Make a promise to yourself that it will not be about money, its all about information. The prospect will buy when they are ready; the most important concept in this first call is to build trust. It is going to be even more effective for you if you make a series of correctly timed, SHORT calls, and approach each with the concept of sharing information with the prospect, specifically about how your opportunity can solve THAT PERSONS unique problems.
Again, I am going to repeat that almost universally, the problem expressed will be a need for extra money, but there may be other needs as well. Be open to the prospects needs, and LISTEN. Then tell the prospect that you are out of time, and that you will get back to them shortly.
Take some time, evaluate that person’s unique situation, and figure out how you can best approach the solution, applying your business opportunity to their unique problem. When you are sure you have your thoughts in order, make the second, SHORT call. Ask if there is time to talk, and if not, and then leave an EXCITED message that you have good news for the prospect about their need to do X.
There are two more aspects of integrational marketing that need to be used in this effort. Number one is to supplement the auto responder with PERSONALLY WRITTEN emails, in the same vein of helping the prospect overcome their unique challenges.
The second aspect is the personal card. This is an INCREDIBLY POWERFUL tool to show the prospect that you care, that you want them to succeed, and that you will help.
If you approach the sales interaction with the proper mindset of having a desire to help, and use integrational marketing techniques, you will get FAR MORE sales then if you rely on the
    auto responder alone.

    Mindset, the law of persistance

I am going to talk now about something that is probably going to be a waste of time. Why would it be a waste of time? Because its one of those things that either you get it or you do not, and really nothing I can say can change that in you.. In the history of the world, I do not think a single person who was not open to this idea could be affected by it.
Its very much like faith, either you believe it or you don't If you can believe it, it can have a dramatic impact on your life, if you don't, it will not change a thing. What am I talking about? I am talking about positive thinking.
OK, what I have said may not be true. I said that it could not affect you if you do not believe it, but when I think further, I have realized that it very much can affect non-believers, and in fact, it will. I say that for the simple reason that if you are not concentrating on positive thoughts, it is very likely that your brain is filled with negative thoughts. If that is the case, believe me, those negative thoughts are having their effect on you, even if you are not aware of them.
Negative thinkers jump to their own defense by shouting immediately "That’s all backwards! I'm a positive thinker, it’s just that life has dealt me such a bad hand, that I cant seem to overcome it with my positive thoughts!" In addition, there, my friends are the seeds of self-defeat, already sewn.
Let us examine that statement. The negative thinker states..."I'm a positive thinker".......OK I'm with you so far......"it’s just that life has dealt me such a bad hand, that I cant seem to overcome it with my positive thoughts!" OUCH, if you think that, you are absolutely correct. If you believe that the circumstances of life prevent you from success, friend, you are RIGHT. There is nothing more to say, except to point out that this is negative thinking.
A guy shared a story with me one day, because earlier in his life, a football coach had shared this with him. He told me that there were two men who had to do a task; one man knew he could accomplish the task, and the other knew he could not. Both men were right.
Is it really that simple? Is it really just a core belief that being absolutely certain that you will accomplish a task is all it takes to get it done? Yup...absolutely, unequivocally, without a doubt, YES.
Just realize this...in the moment before you give up and declare failure, your brain must first admit defeat. That is the moment when you give up on positive thought. Hey, come on, we all have this experience, but if you know the secret of success, you will block that defeat thought, and replace it with a success thought. If you want to understand this in simpler terms, let me rephrase it this way...persistence ALWAYS WINS!!!! The only way that persistence will not win is if it stops.
I was standing on the shore of Hawaii once, and I was admiring the raw, primal beauty of what I saw before me. I was standing on an island, which had been pushed to the surface of the sea by one of the most powerful natural forces of the earth, a long series of volcanic eruptions. At the same time, the ocean was beating the edges of the solid rock island down with wave after wave of tidal force. You could see it; the edges of the island had already crumbled into a rough, sharp grainy gravel, after a mere 10,000 years or so.
I turned around and looked at the island. The volcanic eruptions had stopped on Maui long ago. Before they stopped, however, they had made quite a pile of solid, hard rock. Might the island erupt again? Sure, it is possible, but even if that happens, there is a limit to how long, how much. One day, some day, the volcano will have erupted for the last time, perhaps that day had already passed.
Then I looked back at the sea. The waves had not stopped. The waves would NEVER stop. Every day, every night, those waves pounded the shores of that rock. And eventually, the waves would pound that rock back down into the sea.
Sheer persistence makes the power of positive thinking irrefutable. However, that is not the only factor that is at work here; there is another, less tangible, less absolute, but no less real force at work. It has always existed, but just recently, has it been given a name, and harnessed for personal use. It is now referred to as the Law of Attraction.
The Law of Attraction boils down to the idea that you attract the kind of energy your brain radiates. If you think positive thoughts, you attract positive energy. If you think negative thoughts, you attract negative energy. These energies you attract manifest themselves in a wide variety of ways, most of which we have always thought of as chance or luck.
I'm not going to say that chance or luck do not exist at all....I believe that they do. Its just that I'm no longer sure how much of our lives circumstance is luck, and how much is the Law of Attraction.
When you think positive thoughts, you meet positive people, who can help you in a variety of ways. You meet people who need help in ways that you are able to give. The gratitude of these people adds to your positive energy, and the favors flow back to you from other sources. You stumble upon money, things are given to you, the ball bounces in your direction, you win lotteries, and good things just HAPPEN.
When you think negative thoughts, you meet people who are after you, and mean you harm. You lose money, through bad deals, or simple carelessness. The ball bounces away from your reach, or hits you in the face, you develop illness, and you have very little help....bad things just happen.
Somewhere in the universe, there is a measuring stick that accounts for all this on a unit-by-unit level, but we cannot see it. The energies and the way that they flow do not always make sense to us, but they are real. The concept that you might not believe in them has no more meaning then saying that you don't believe that the moon exists.....your belief has no bearing on the reality.
Just believe that you can succeed, and good things will just happen. Moreover, while you are believing with all of your heart, and attracting all that good energy to yourself, also apply the more practical, tangible law, the law of persistence
    Persistence ALWAYS WINS.
