Successful negotiations require three elements—an acceptable and achievable objective, effective leverage, and convincing the other party that if you cannot reach an acceptable result by a date certain you will walk away from the negotiation and resort to other means. All three are lacking in ongoing negotiations with Iran over its nuclear weapons program.  If the Obama administration wants to avoid war, it must be prepared to convince Iran that it is willing to start one.
