We will be discussing the courage and commitment it takes to be an activist and the costs and benefits of such a life to our relationships, careers, lifestyles, safety, psyches, and spirits.  All of these are explored in depth in this exciting novel.  So, we will also discuss the power of fiction to effectively reveal these costs and benefits and draw the reader into relationship with this larger, deeper world.

Earl’s novel centers around anti-logging activism in The Bella Coola Valley, a gem of natural beauty within the Central Coast of British Columbia that has been home to the the Nuxalk (pronounced new-hawk) Nation for the last 10,000 years.  Merry and Burl loved the book which goes deep into the motivations, relationships, psychology, and risks of dedicated activists.
