#EWWNRADIO 619-639-4709 (SUN – FRI 10PM EST / 7PM PST) “LADIES NIGHT”-“Do Self-help Books Help or Hurt.” Despite their huge sales and popularity Self-help books are criticized widely. They are mostly opportunistic and filled with a lot of Psychological jargon used inaccurately to talk about personal problems. In a word – psychobabble. WHAT? How many of us at one time or the other have read these acclaimed books and are still not richer, thinner or smarter? Self- help books are a multibillion dollar industry in the US alone and the average American can still barely make it to the next pay period, they are still over weight and some of us may not say it but they have seen a psychologist, medical doctor and/or are on some type of anti-depressant medication. Self-help books are designed to help us with Personal growth – Improving ones-self, Relationships – Improving personal relations and communication skills, Coping – how to deal with difficult events and situations and Identity – gaining personal insight. In reality self-help books play on peoples low self-esteem – it says something is wrong with you so you need to improve yourself and/or the problem in the relationship is you” “You need to be clearer when trying to get your point across.” “You are not a people person.” “You need to work on your interpersonal skills.” “You are not very bright.” “You, you, you – low self-esteem affects virtually every aspect of your life.
